I have heard that it's nice but I have never been able to secure a booking. Last two times I tried I did not even get a response.

I can't help thinking that a little humility in your response might have helped, Mike...

TrongpaiExpat is a well known contributor here and it might have been better to say something along the lines of "I'm terribly sorry to hear that you had difficulty making contact. Perhaps you could let me know when that happened so that I can investigate whether our procedures didn't match our usual high standards. Please get in touch with me direct - here is my phone number - so that we can sort it out and help you in the future."

Instead, your immediately rather touchy response - with no offer to investigate and its "no, he's wrong and simply cannot be telling the truth" tone - doesn't exactly communicate to your potential customers the ideal of the relaxed, welcoming, thoughtful and helpful host that one would like to meet on arrival at one's accommodation! I hope this is not symptomatic of your promised "freindly [sic.] atmosphere"? Would we get an equally abrupt and disbelieving response if, for instance, we dared to report that our room hadn't been cleaned that day?

Hence we ought to wish for peace, to seek it if we do not already have it, to conserve it once it is attained, and to repel with all our strength the strife which is opposed to it. To this end individual[s]... and in even greater degree groups and communities are obliged to help one another... from the bond or law of human society." OK, clarifying a little. First two time I tried to book via E mail I got a prompt response but you had no rooms for the dates I wanted. Then there was two other inquiries by E mail that I did not receive a response. Sorry, I don't have exact dates (quite some time ago) and I see you have three e mails listed, I don't know which one I used.

It's looks like a very nice place and several friends recommend it highly and have told me to give it a try. Not sure I am welcome now.

Ultimately the customer forms his own opinion about the standard of customer service.

Of course, if the guesthouse in question ALWAYS replies to e-mails, by definition there must be some infallible process in place to monitor the replies to ensure they have been made.

9 times out of 10 the problem with e mails that are not received is that they go to the junk mail filter. Otherwise depending on the mail service you get a failure to deliver notice. I find e mails that I want every now and then in my junk folder. With hotmail if the address is in your safe list or address book it comes through otherwise there's always a risk of ending up with all the Viagra and penis enlargement adds in the junk folder.

Hotels that have a web based booking form incorporated into the hotel web page are probably more reliable.

Looking at my response above, maybe I was a little harsh.

It's just that so many farang business operators in Thailand act as though they are doing us customers a service and that we should be grateful whatever the standard is. I guess it's partly because so many of them have no proper business background or training before they arrive in Thailand and they then decide to open up their enterprise as a sort of "hobby" to keep them busy or even just to generate a small extra income to allow them to experience Thailand's (male) "delights" all year round. Some training in modern standards of customer service is urgently required!
