Over 12 Million Aussies have Voted in the SSM Survey

Votes continue to pour in for Australia’s $122 million same sex marriage poll, with responses soaring past 12.3 million last week. 77 per cent (over 3 out of 4) of all eligible voters have now had their say according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics. The poll will close on Tuesday, November 7 at 6pm. Almost 16 million forms were sent out in September.

The 77 per cent return rate to the survey has outstripped similar voluntary participation votes including Brexit and the US presidential election. The return rate for Britain’s Brexit poll was 72.2 per cent.
The Yes campaign welcomed the latest figures. “We welcome the high turnout of voters because it shows that Australians are passionate about getting marriage equality done.”
Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull promised to legalise same sex marriage by Christmas should the Yes vote prevail. Acting Prime Minister Julie Bishop said the government would waste no time legalising gay marriage should the yes vote get up.
