Has anyone stayed at the Tarntawan recently? Are the renovations complete and what is the condition of the rooms and bathrooms. Thank you.

Yes, unfortunately, I could not post about it while in Thailand.
I obtained a reservation about a week prior to my stay (in March). The room had 1 bed, there was plenty of hot water. BUT, I saw no sign of renovations on the 2nd floor, where I was staying. However, there was no requirement for renovation, the room was fine.

I was there in February.
Stayed on the 8th Floor, room with large bed.
Rooms have been nicely refurbished. New TVs; however, the furniture is the same.
Bathroom as unchanged, but fine by my standards.
Only thing I found strange is the carpet was new FROM the elevator lobby, down the hall, and into the rooms.
But still the OLD red carpet n the elevator lobby. Well, do not spend much time in the elevator lobby!!!
Rates are UP. I know some find Tarntawan expensive.
But I enjoy it for the location, the food, and particularly the staff!!
Worth the price.
OH, and wireless internet connection in the computer room.
But did not reach to the 8th floor.
Reserve early, in Febraury they where fully-booked!!!
I often make booking at the Tarntawan for friends visiting from overseas.Originally Posted by let me tell u
At present the rate I get as a regular booker is 2000Baht a night. You may have to pay a little more as a non-regular. The location and standard of the hotel is superb and the only facility lacking is a pool. However guests can use the Clark- Hatch centre swiming pool around the corner.
Personally for the location/facilties and cost I think the Tarntawan is unbeatable value.
Is there such a hotel by this name Penquin Hotel which is near Hotel Malaysia? LMTU, where is it actually?
More of a guesthouse than a hotel but the Peguin House is located at 27/23 Sribumpen, Sathorn fairly close to the Malaysia.Originally Posted by rustee

The area around Soi Ngam Duphli was originally the backpack area of Bangkok and still has many guest houses and travel agencies

I hope that my posts will be of use.
I stayed here once
english.taipei.gov.tw/zoo/index.jsp?categid=4019&recordid=5245
- it was very cold and smelled of fish
but the other guests were delightful
One night I got a little tipsy and hooked up with this tall number...well...the less said the better...
As the only decent, gay-friendly hotel in the Silom neighbourhood, the Tarntawan is often fully booked, and it is difficult to obtain a room. In my case -- I was unable to get a room 8 of the 9 times I have tried in 2006 -- and in most of these cases I tried to book 2 weeks in advance.
I would love to hear comments from others on alternative DECENT hotels that don't ask questions and don't embarrass their guests with joiners fees or other such nonsense.
And while a lot of folks here seem to like it, the Pinnacle doesn't quite make the "decent" category in my book -- stained carpets, rooms that smell like dust, broken furniture, and positively craptific service put this one into the backpacker category.
In response to the original post -- the newly renovated rooms at Tarntawan are fine -- carpets and furniture are tasteful. There are still no safety boxes in the rooms, and little has been done in the bathrooms. Addition of broadband Internet is great, but as someone pointed out, it doesn't work on the 8th floor. Also while one can often get a wireless connection, the connection to the Internet at the back end is down more often than not.
DreadedNed has a list of gay-friendly hotels - http://www.dreadedned.com/directory/qui ... e=3&Area=1 in Silom (of varying quality)
