A bomb incident in Bangkok today :-((

So, for those that stated this wasn't "actually" happening and it was all hype etc ...................

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-17026007 14th Feb 2012

A foreign man has been seriously wounded in Bangkok after explosives he was said to be carrying went off, local media report.

His legs were blown off, according to police and a government spokesman.

An explosion was also reported at the house he had been renting in central Bangkok, the government spokesman said.

Last month the US embassy warned of possible attacks in Bangkok. A Lebanese man was later arrested and bomb-making materials found.

Police told the Reuters news agency that based on initial reports, they believed that the man was Iranian. Thai media also said that an identity card found nearby indicated the man could be of Iranian origin.

"The police have control of the situation. It is thought that the suspect might be storing more explosives inside his house," a police spokesman was quoted by Reuters as saying.

The man is said to be receiving emergency treatment in hospital.

The blasts in Bangkok come a day after two bomb attacks targeting Israeli diplomats in India and Georgia. Israel has accused Iran and Lebanon's Hezbollah of orchestrating the attacks. Iran denies the claims

Members may be interested in reading the following email message which I received from the British Embassy in Bangkok:

    тАЬAll,

You may have seen the local media reports of a bomb explosion in Ekamai during the afternoon of 14 February. In light of these reports we have amended our Travel Advice for Thailand to include a factual reference to explosion. The level of our travel advice has not changed. The wording we have added is below:

We are aware of reports of an explosion at Soi 71, sub Soi 35 (known as Soi Preedee 35) in the Ekamai district of central Bangkok during the afternoon of 14 February. Initial reports indicate that four people were injured and have been taken to hospital. You should remain vigilant, follow the advice of Thai authorities and monitor the local news.

Yeah looks perhaps like a premature detonation in that perhaps as he was either moving or preparing the explosives or on his way to trigger them somewhere else (somewhere busy), so that's two lucky escapes now, the first being a few weeks ago when they were able to find and arrest the bombers and now this.

Unfortunately and in the words of the IRA the bombers only have to be lucky once whereas we (the tourists and locals) have to be lucky every time :-(((

Lets hope this isn't the start of a concerted campaign in Thailand as after the floods etc and the (bad) press that received worldwide this is the last thing that Thailand's tourist industry needs right now :-(

Re: Update on the bombing incident in Bangkok

Thailand blasts: 'Iranian' bomber injured in Bangkok

BBC security corespondent Gordon Corera: "The timing, the link to Iran, will raise suspicions that this might be part of a co-ordinated campaign"
A man thought to be Iranian has had both legs blown off after attempting to throw a bomb at police in the Thai capital, Bangkok, officials said.

Two other explosions were reported in the same busy commercial district of the Thai capital, injuring four others.

Police said one blast took place at the house the injured man rented with other Iranians. One of those men also threw a bomb at a taxi in the capital.

Last month the US embassy warned of possible attacks in Bangkok.

The blasts come just one day after two bomb attacks targeted Israeli diplomats in India and Georgia.

Israel has accused Iran and Lebanon's Hezbollah of orchestrating the attacks. Iran denied the allegations.

    Identity card
Police told the BBC that the first explosion happened around 1420 local time (0720 GMT) at a house in the Ekamai area in central Bangkok, which three Iranians were believed to have rented for a month.

Two men managed to escape the explosion that severely damaged the house, according to police, but the third man who suffered minor injuries tried to hail a taxi. When the taxi refused to stop for him, he threw at least one bomb at it. Police believe one bomb exploded under the taxi.

The third explosion happened when that man then attempted to throw another bomb at police, but missed, and ended up blowing his own legs off.

He is said to be receiving emergency treatment in hospital. Thai media said that an identity card found nearby indicated the man could be of Iranian origin.

"The police have control of the situation. It is thought that the suspect might be storing more explosives inside his house," a police spokesman was quoted by Reuters as saying.

NIguy that is just so funny ... do these people never read what they have written .. ' he tried to throw it at the police '
shouldnt he have lost his arms ? did he forget it was strapped to his leg when he tried to throw it ... if so why didnt he lose his arms and legs ?.. or was there a mistake in the report and he tried to drop kick it at them ..
these first on the button news reports really are a waste of time ... remember the *bomber* who was killed on the tube in london ... big coat ... shifty looking ... jumped the barrier,, run from the police .... etc etc turns out he was an electrician in a t-shirt on his way to work .... anyone else for another exclusive !!!!

Of course, that particular "on the button" information was actually put out by the Metropolitan Police in an attempt to cover up shooting an unarmed and completely innocent man 7 times in the head at point blank range.

I remember somebody on SGT actually suggesting it was his own fault for running away when a pack of gun-wielding guys started to chase him with no justification whatsoever.

I'm not understanding why you would automatically think that would be the case ? He obviously threw it, it landed or went towards the ground and the blast was thus at a low level so blew his legs off - thankfully ! as if it had of been higher up perhaps more people would have been injured.

"these first on the button news reports really are a waste of time...."

I disagree. I posted it simply as news, from a reasonably reliable source ( BBC) for those that might be interested as the incident had unfolded as it happened in Bangkok I believed it may actually be of interest to people there, however if of course you find no use in reading such things as you carry little trust in them anyway then no one's forcing you.

You are however right about one thing in that even though my post was an update on a "happening" event you can bet that even what has been reported to date is certainly not the full story and you can be fairly sure that these guys were coming out of a home made bomb factory, where most likely a large(r) bomb was being assembled and being made made for use elsewhere and either the local police may have been "unlucky" in discovering the bombers due to some random issue such as a noise complaint etc or ( and what is more likely ) is that they had already been under the close watch of the Thai and US security services for some time and fearing that they had been discovered or the "police" were moving in to make arrests the terrorists tried to flee, with one of them chosing to "go for it" and attack the security services / police to assist in making good their escape, but as with all things of this nature we'll probably never know.

Anyway, thankfully no one was hurt apart from the bomber and lets hope it stays that way.
