Environment Day in Thailand free pot

    The Nation

A long stretch of white collar workers queued up on the Silom Road leading to the entrance of the CP Tower midday Tuesday waiting to receive a free pot of terracotta. A total of 2,000 of these small plants were being given away for free as part of the celebration of the World Environment Day by Bangkok-based Greenpeace Southeast Asia.

"Global warming is everyone's responsibility," says Uaphan Chamnanua, public outreach coordinator of Greenpeace Southeast Asia. To celebrate each country has her own campaigns to suit her own situation, says the coordinator. She cited Bali, for an example, where there is a campaign to stop the use of coal.

Planting a tree is the easiest and most economical way for each of us to participate in helping stop global warming, she added. "A plant in its whole life which can absorb a ton of carbon dioxide," she went on. So why Thailand's financial district was chosen as the venue for the campaign? "We acknowledged that working people with urban lifestyle, especially in the very heart of the city, consume larger amount of energy in a day than people in rural or other parts," the coordinator pointed out.

The free small plant is accompanied with a tag with a reminder that one can be environmental-conscious even if one sits in front of a monitor through out the day. It pointed to nine easy ways to help stop climate change:

    1. A ten-minute shower bath use only half of the amount of water of a tub bath. Turn off the faucet while brushing your teeth can save 151 litres of water within a month.

    2. A power-saving bulb consumes 4 times less power, lasts 8 times more, than a fluorescent bulb. Each powersaving bulb helps lessen the emission of carbon dioxide by 4,500 kg

    3. A two-door, 400 litre, fridge with temperature set at -17 to -15 celcius in the freezer, and 3-5 celcius in the lower fridge is the best in power saving.

    4. Set your air conditioner at 25 celcius. Lower than 25 celcius would increase the power consumption by 5-10 per cent.

    5. A flatscreen laptop consumes 5 times less power than a PC. Screen server and standby mode do not save energy. A laser printer consumes less power than an injet.

    6. Use a cotton tote bag instead of plastic bags when going shopping. Each year people around the world throw away more than 100,000 million plastic supermarket bags. Remember that lessening your trashes equals to lessening the emission of carbon dioxide.

    7. Wear organic clothes, use recycled products.

    8. A plant in its whole life can absorb a ton of carbon dioxide.

    9. Be a volunteer to stop global warming.
