Times: Ousted Thai PM lands in London

Thai PM lands in London after coup as military plans handover

The ousted Prime Minister of Thailand tonight landed in London on a chartered flight from New York after he was deposed in a bloodless military coup yesterday.

As the leader of the military coup tightened his grip over the country and announced that a new Prime Minister would be appointed in two weeks' time, Mr Shinawatra touched down at Gatwick on a flight from New York.

Smiling and looking relaxed he was driven away to London under police escort in a black Mercedes with the registration number "THAI 1".

He was accompanied by several loyal aides and was expected to be joined by Kanthathi Suphamongkhon, his Foreign Minister.

The British Government said that Mr Thaksin was welcome here as a private visitor, but pointedly refused to endorse his return to power.

"It is not for us to say that he should be reinstalled," said Margaret Beckett, the Foreign Secretary. "We have called for a return to democratic government."

Mr Thaksin has close personal and business interests in Britain and is a frequent visitor to London, where he recently brought luxury home.

It is believed that he will be reunited in the city with his wife, who left Thailand last night, their daughters, Pinthangta and Paethongton, and son Panthongtae.

I hope he realises he has to be out after 90 days. Was his trip to New York just a visa run then?

Yes, but it's much nicer that Brits and Americans can just turn up in Thailand for a 30 day holiday without having to apply for a visa!

    Burberry

The British are such scum, they harbour some of the worlds worst criminals, as long as they have money they leave them alone. They have become the cesspit of Europe. I can just see Thaksin and his baggage hiding out in Kensington, decked to the shifty eyeballs in Burberry whilst peeking over the dash boards of Range Rovers, what a happy picture, safe at last.

Given the vain idiocy if the man, he will surely be tempted to run in the next Thai elections, and before he knows it, the world will flash past his eyes, and he will find his neck firmly in the serrated grip of a rat trap in the basement of the Bangkok Hilton. What rotten lucks.
