I also used a guide the first day in Bangkok. I had never been to the city and didn't know the layout.

I took a walking tour of Silom, China Town (MRT from Silom), Sathorn, Grand Palace, Chao Praya river down to Sathorn and BTS from Sapan Thaksin back to Sala Daeng. Also showed me where all the bars and sex shows.

This was only 1/2 day tour but it gave me a "feel" for the general layout and now each time I come back I am so grateful for it. I became confident and competent at getting about Bangkok.

Get all the maps you can online (free). Bangkok BTS (Sky Train) map, Bangkok MRT (underground train) map. Thjey will be invaluable and save you money and time getting about. The Skytrain goes all the way out to MO Chit where the weekend market is.
