Passenger confusion at new hand luggage rules

"Airline passengers face confusion as a result of the partial relaxation of the one-bag hand luggage limit.

While the Government has said that passengers passing through 22 airports will be allowed to take more than one piece of luggage on board, airlines are also imposing their own rules.

As a result, some airports will have to deal with passengers facing different limits, depending on the airline they are using.

British Airways will, for example, allow two bags at Heathrow, London City, Aberdeen, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Manchester and Newcastle.

But it will only allow one piece of carry-on luggage at Gatwick, Jersey and Newquay.

Virgin economy class passengers will be allowed to take two bags on board its flights at Heathrow, but only one at Gatwick.

Similarly Bmi economy passengers will be limited to one bag at Jersey, but two at Heathrow.

Just to add to the confusion, both airlines are allowing business class passengers to carry two bags - and a further "small bag" - at those airlines where the rules have been eased.

The small print of airlines' policy could make things even worse, with some - such as British Airways - allowing two bags, and others like Lufthansa specifying one "plus a small bag", normally no bigger than a laptop computer.

A spokesman for Stansted said that the airport expected airlines to enforce their own baggage restrictions...."
