"Hail the conquering hero." Too bad, but the people have made their choice, and everyone must live with it. Criminal charges? Probably will be quickly dropped. Back taxes? Same.

It seems incredible that one involved in so much "mischief" should be welcomed as a saviour, but that seems to be "the Thai way" in this case.

It may even be quite interesting seeing if he is received, as was mentioned, as the saviour.

Or perhaps he might have a litttle more trouble wresting power off the new PM. It's not a given just yet. I personally think he's in for a bit of a wrestling match with the judiciary et al.

... and there's the countryside. The Democrats clearly won in Bangkok, where anti-Thaksin feelings, particularly about his corruption, are the strongest. The current PPP leader is an autocrat in the Thaksin mode and was a disastrous Governor of Bangkok - something residents of Bangkok also held against voting for the PPP

the PPP party have been having some difficulty getting support from the minor parties to form a majority. Among the several conditions they were insisting on before supporting PPP were that the judical process wrt Taksin not be interfered with, and that the assets examination commission not be shut down. also a number of PPP candidates have been disqualified for 'irregularites'.
latest reports are that the PPP will accept these conditions, so maybe Taksin will be looking for an extension on his UK visa. seems the PPP are not going to have the same amount of control and freedom as Taksin and TRT did when they were in office.

The election was only last week, and the world over there's posturing between political parties while coalitions are being formed. I do realise that a number of Forum members have entered for the Jumping to Conclusions event in the 2008 Olympics, however

Not all that "incredible" when you consider that, for whatever reason, he is virtually the only Thai politician ever to have done anything for the Thai poor / Isaan populace / majority of the Thai population, who voted for him because they genuinely supported him rather than because he gave them a couple of hundred baht to do so and then ignored them, like his predecessors.
