JAKARTA, Indonesia - A moderate earthquake rocked parts of southeastern Indonesia on Tuesday, but an initial report of a possible tsunami was later discounted when officials downgraded the tremor.

There were no immediate reports of damage or casualties.

The earthquake struck near Indonesia's Moluccas islands, an official at the country's meteorological agency said.

"There is a possibility of a tsunami, but until now we have not received a report that it has happened," Fauzi, head seismologist at the agency, told Reuters when the agency first reported a 6.4 magnitude quake.

The agency later lowered that to 5.4.

Big surprise. One killer tsunami in 300 years, and the chicken littles will be squawking for the next millennium.

I dont think that's strictly true.
Both Tambora in 1815 and Krakatoa in 1883 resulted in deaths in Thailand.
