Can falang (Westerners) buy and own a car in Thailand?

    I don't know why I don't know this.... But...

Can falang (Westerners) buy and own a car in Thailand? Or is it like land.... only Thai people can own it...?

Also, are they going to tell me I need a work permit to buy a car?

One final sidebar question, is it easy to get a work permit? Many banks and things ask for one. What's the easiest way to get one?

Thanks, Buck. This one looks like an informative read: http://ezinearticles.com/?Car-Ownership ... id=2880661

( I wish I had a personal assistant, or better yet, I wish I knew how to work Google Search... )

    ( Or maybe.... if I weren't so damn lazy.... ) lol :-\

Quote.Good news is: I hired a new PA already. Today was his first day. His English is nearly as good as mine. He has a very strong work ethic. He is happy to work long hours and 6 days a week. And the salary he asked for was significantly less than I was expecting to pay. This allows me to offer him raises and/or bonuses as he proves himself "invaluable". He's not Thai. He is Philippino. End quote.

Little confused as to what you are doing. On the 4th March you told us the above. Today 8th March it is a different story!!! Do you make things up as you go along?

    I guess it wasn't clear....

    I was joking....

Because I do have a personal assistant, and I do know how to use google search....

The part about me being very lazy was true, however.

You don't need a work permit to buy a car in Thailand and register it in your name as a foreigner. Any type of visa will do, provided you've got the cash to buy the car obviously. In a nutshell, all you need is a Certificate of Residence from either your embassy or Thai immigration. That's because the address of the car owner needs to be registered, so some kind of official certification of your residential address is required. That's pretty much it.

What kind of DL you can get, on the other hand, does depend on your visa situation. And it's definitely a good idea to obtain a Thai DL when driving (and owning) a car in Thailand.
Yes, grandpa, I know it used to be more fun 30 years ago...

Bruce, rather than put the car in your name and risk law suits (deep pocket farang) in case of accidents, maybe best to put car in the name of your bf?

I can imagine how that could work out.

"Hey, Boyfriend #3. I am going to put the car in your name. I will pay for it. It will be my car, not yours, it will only be in your name. What do you say about that?"

    These are the good'ol days
