Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya World Heritage Fair - Date: 13-22 December 2013 - The 10-day fair will feature cultural performances and entertainments - THAI COCKFIGHTING GAME !!!

Surely they don't "actually" show live cock fighting there ? I would have thought like most Countries that cockfighting is illegal there - and especially in one of their main tourist cultural parks ! - no ?

    Fighting Cock

And wasn't a European beer company caught sponsoring a dog fighting event in Thailand a year or two ago?

I snapped this while riding my bicycle through another Historical Park, Sukhothai. Could there be a connection? What about Ayutthaya

Chinese New Year is widely celebrated in Chinatown on Yaowarat Road, one of the most famous roads in Bangkok often referred to as the Golden Road and the Land of the Siamese Dragon. Visitors experience the strong connection between Thai and Chinese communities through the magnificent cultural performances that show the deep roots of Chinese culture in Thailand. This special occasion is opened by HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn every year. There are several shrines located in this area, and it is believed that making merit at them during Chinese New Year brings good luck.

Highlight: Street performances such as dragon parades and lion dances, take place along Yaowarat Road, along with a wide range of delicious Chinese cuisine on sale on both sides of the street. Wearing a Chinese costume to participate in this event is recommended.

It's a busy time in Asia for flights around Chinese New Year and Tet and so the price of some flights in and around the week before and after the 31st may go up and space may be limited, so plan accordingly.

    17 January 2014 - 19 January 2014

This annual event celebrates Bor Sang villageтАЩs reputation as the community that creates ThailandтАЩs most famous umbrellas made from Saa paper.

Legend has it that a monk travelled to neighbouring Myanmar, where he came across Saa paper umbrellas that offered protection against both the sun and rain. He returned with the production technique and introduced the umbrella to the elders of Bor Sang village, who added their own artistic skills to create a distinctive colourful, but very practical, umbrella. At first it was just a profitable hobby that supplemented the villagersтАЩ earnings from the annual rice crop.

However, with time production of the Saa paper umbrellas prospered, prompting villagers to establish a handicraft cooperative in 1941 that now organises the annual Bor Sang Umbrella and Sankampaeng Handicraft Festival. During the three-day festival, streets are illuminated by lanterns, while hundreds of umbrellas are hung from the rafters and beams of houses and shops. Bands play, while villagers compete to design the yearтАЩs most attractive umbrella. Concerts, a food festival and beauty contest all compete for the attention of the audience, a mix of both tourists and residents, who gather to celebrate Bor SangтАЩs innovative handicraft skills.
