US Embassy WARNING - Tuesday Sept 18th

Security Message to American Citizens: Demonstration at U.S. Embassy Bangkok on September 18
    September 18, 2012
The U.S. Embassy in Bangkok, Thailand has been informed by the Royal Thai Police that a demonstration involving several hundred people is planned on Wireless Road in front of the Embassy beginning between 1 PM and 2 PM on Tuesday, September 18. Demonstrators will assemble at Lumpini Park and march to the Embassy. The large number of demonstrators is expected to disrupt traffic in the area. Consequently, the Embassy will be closing to the public at noon and non-essential personnel will be sent home. Visa and citizen services appointments scheduled for the afternoon of September 18 are being cancelled and rescheduled for later dates.

The U.S. Embassy in Bangkok is not aware at this time of any specific threat to U.S. citizens in Thailand. As a general precaution, the U.S. Embassy advises you to exercise caution and to be aware of your surroundings, particularly around large crowds or gatherings. Even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and possibly escalate into violence with little or no warning. You should avoid areas that may be targeted for demonstrations and exercise caution if within the vicinity of any demonstrations or large gatherings. You should monitor local media to keep updated with the latest information about demonstrations and areas to avoid.

Wow, I know some of us quibble with him about the price of a bottle of beer at his bar and stuff and we grip about never winning the prizes at Boy Bingo and the like sometimes but I think organising a march to the US Embassy in protest is a BIT over the top ! lol

Why would a Buddhist (much less several hundred Buddhists!) give a fig about a YouTube insult to Islam? And I can't believe that these several hundred people will all be Koran-thumping Moslems either. rotest:

Appears to me that such a demonstration will be more likely intended to rattle the cage of the current Thai government than America's...

Youtube stated they would not remove the movie as it did not infringe their rules. Correct decision IMHO.

Youtube is owned by Google who for a huge, money orientated multinational have a goodish record of telling governments to get stuffed. Hence they are not popular in China unlike Yahoo who handed over a dissident.

Don't forget there are something like 5 million Muslims living in Thailand - and not all in the south. There are various Muslim communities dotted in and around Bangkok. And that's before you count those from the Middle East, Malaysia, Indonesia etc. who also live here.
