Hello, has anyone on the board been to Hanoi? I went to Saigon a few years ago and had an amazing time with the locals there. This time I'm going to Hanoi. Should I expect the same enthusiastic type of guys available on the apps like Grindr, etc? Any tips for a newcomer to Hanoi?
Also, I would like to find a guest friendly hotel in Hanoi. Anyone have any info on this?

It's a bit of a stereotype in Vietnam that people in the North are discreet and conservative while people in the South are direct and fun-loving.
From traveling both to Hanoi and Saigon a few times, I would say it's kinda true. I mean I was getting more offers for threesomes in Saigon than I have in many other places including Bangkok, Europe or the Sates.
That said, there are plenty of guys on apps like Grindr, Hornet and Blued in Hanoi. Not sure about your age/body, but I don't think you should have problems finding available guy.
As for accommodation, I would recommend Airbnb, if you plan to bring guys over. In the best case, the hotel will make the local guy check-in and show his ID. In some places, you even have to pay an extra fee or the guest might be forbidden from going to your room, though I haven't heard of the latter happening.
I know some guys, especially in Hanoi, hate meetings people in hotels because they have to go through check-in and face the looks of the hotel receptionist.
The good thing is, plenty of Airbnb places in Hanoi, don't have a doorman, so guys can walk in straight to your apartment.
Funny note: the guys are not only supposed to check-in but also check-out at the reception when they leave. However, not many do that. I remember one time, when I stayed around one week in Saigon, at the moment I was about to check-out from my hotel, I was informed that the number of guys still showing up as checked-in in my room was in double-digitsLuckily, no extra charge.
Another time, the reception actually called me to come pick up the guy and mentioned in front of him that there were already 3 people that have checked-in in my room. The guy was a bit surprised, but he still performed pretty well.
So, definitely an Airbnb is the way to go!
I'd be wary of taking a stranger back to an air bnb, but that's just me.
When I was in Saigon the hotel had a policy of no vistors in your room after 9pm.
Given the sheer number of guys and gals on the game - girls and their pimps/husbands on every corner of the street leading to the river - there would be lots odd short -term hotels I'd imagine.

In Hanoi I stayed at the Sofitel Legend Metropole hotel, which has this restriction:
If a non-Vietnamese male guest is to stay in the same room as a Vietnamese female guest, a valid marriage certificate must be provided when checking in at the hotel. Otherwise, check-in may be refused.

I have visited Hanoi 8 or 9 times ,always staying in airbnbs .always plenty of fun of grindr including a memorable group session with 4 vietnamese guys ( one a regular and three that i was chatting to seperatly on grindr but who turned out to be friends who were also chatting to each other on grindr and who arrived together on one motorbike). I also particularly remember a kinky session with a young polish tourist and two vietnamese guys.
If you have poppers and somewhere discrete to accomodate you should find plenty of willing boys ,paid and otherwise

A good thing of many of Airbnb places in Vietnam is that they don't have a reception you have to go through, so the guy(s) can head straight to your place.
In my experience, this is definitely true.
I would say Vietnamese guys are definitely the most opened in Asia when it comes to threesomes and group play, much more so than Thais, who though a good number might agree to get shared between two farangs, 95 % would flat out say no, if the other guy is also a Thai.
In Vietnam, a lot of times is actually the local guy who would propose to go beyond a 1-1 and won't mind if the guys that join are Vietnamese or foreigners
I just got back from Hanoi and Jakarta, and had a blast. I will post something about Jakarta in the world forum, but as for Hanoi Vietnam, all I can say is it was a blast. I used Grindr and Blued. I got lots of messages on Grindr, but Blued kept me really busy when I was not taking tours and eating local foods. My hotel was a small boutique hotel in the Old French Quarter near St Joseph's Cathedral. The boys came up to my room easily by saying they were there to see me as friends. No trouble there at all. I was planning to visit the Titan Sauna, but I got so much action on the apps that I didn't bother with the sauna. If you go there, don't forget to see the tomb and remains of Ho Chi Minh, Ha Long Bay, and the other amazing things to do and see in Hanoi. One could get so caught up with the local boys that you forget to take in the culture, too.

I would say a good 10% of all the hits I got on Grindr where for a 3some and the best thing of Viet guys is that they don't care if the others are foreigner or local, contrary to Thai guys who usually would do this kind of activity only if the two others were farangs.
