Hong Kong and Manila would seem the obvious places, although the former is a good deal more expensive than Manila. I don't suggest Japan unless you have been there before and know the scene.
Hanoi 3 hours, Saigon 4 hours, Seoul 1 hour.
Thanks guys. I've been to Hong Kong twice and Hanoi twice so I'm crossing those off the list. More suggestions please, preferably with first hand sexual experience. (Forgive the pun)

I'm really not sure what other suggestions can be given. You can take a compass and draw a circle around Shanghai measuring a 4-hour flight time. Saigon would seem an obvious choice from what others have written - but it is a little outside your limit. You're really stuck with China, Japan, Korea (South and North should you be so minded), Macao, Myanmar, Laos, much of Vietnam and Taiwan. There's plenty of rent in Tokyo and Osaka. You just need to look at the various rent bars like Kings of College in Tokyo. But if you don't know your way around, don't speak a little Japanese or have a Japanese gay friend, you will likely end up pretty frustrated. I've chatted with a few non-commercial guys from Macao and expect there must be a rent scene there given the prevalence of the casinos and masses of holidaymakers. I have a lot of first hand experience in Taiwan, but not with rent. Indeed, there seem to be very few MBs on the apps. I'd still go with Manila where there is a rent scene and no language problem.
As long as you can splash the cash a little, Tokyo would be ideal.
If you're going there, I can provide you with website links and GPS links for several host bars that welcome English speaking customers. An hour of the best service you will ever get costs under JPY 15,000. Which is not cheap.
Freelance can be as little as half that, but you cannot guarantee to get any.
Something like the Tokyu Stay Shinjuku hotel is well located for the gay district. Stylish, but very compact rooms.

Thank you once again. I'm looking very seriously at Fukuoma. It looks lovely, big enough to be interesting and small enough to be manageable. Only 1 1/2 hours flight and a gay scene.
I stress I have not visited the city (Fukuoka I think). So I hope you have a really great time. All I can say is a gay couple from Taiwan I know well were there last autumn and found it scenically pretty boring and the nightlife not very accommodating to foreigners. But then they were not looking for rent.
I do not know why you have not listed Denpasar on Bali??
Lots of hot handsome men there and all willing to accept payment for their time...
