Pilot killed in Thai plane crash

The plane was landing in heavy rain and high winds

The pilot of a Thai plane has been killed and 10 passengers wounded as it skidded off the runway while landing on the tourist island of Koh Samui.

The Bangkok Airways flight, carrying 70 people, hit an old and unmanned control tower amid reports of heavy rain.

The plane had taken off from the southern Thai town of Krabi, another resort popular with tourists.

Officials said many of the wounded were tourists. Hospital sources told the BBC four Britons may be among those hurt.

"Sadly we have learnt that the pilot of the aircraft has died and so far 10 passengers are confirmed wounded," said Kannikar Kemavuthanon, the director general of the Department of Civil Aviation.

Local reports said some of the injured passengers suffered broken legs.

"The plane just pinched the control tower but there was no fire," Sakchai Jorpalit, district chief of the Thai tourist island, told the French news agency AFP.

The crash happened at around 1400 local time (0800 GMT).

The resort island of Koh Samui lies some 300 miles (480km) south of Bangkok.

A colleague of my partner was killed in the previous Bangkok Airways crash into Samui about 20 years ago. When we flew into Samui he turned white.

Let me guess...this will be yet another "final nail in the coffin of Thai tourism" to all the Chicken Littles out there.

No but just another little negative to add to all the other little negatives about Thailand in the foreign press over the last year or so. Sex tourists will come regardless but dont expect the general tourism industry picking up anytime soon.

Sad about any deaths and injuries, but NO ONE was "wounded." This was not an act of war, this was an accident.
Geez, BBC, get real. The other people were injured. Don't make everything in the world into a war. There is enough of that as it is.

GET REAL? Get real? Why don't you get real? According to the opening post, the word "wound", which is a perfectly acceptable synonym for "injury" is first introduced by the local spokesman. If you are going to try to teach the BBC English, which is the language of England, you have a long way to go. Do excuse the British if they affect to speak their native tongue in some way different from the rest of the world. They have every fucking right to!

Maisoui, my dad was killed in a car accident. We consider that he was killed and not that he died, because someone ran a red light causing the accident, in effect killing him. My personal interpretation on this is just that. Some people will say he was killed, others will say he died.

While I agree with you, about the wording, and that people can interpret things however they want, or use whatever words they want to describe things.

But to fly off the handle like that, and go on a rant? Take a pms pill and a xanax, sit down and breath into a paper bag, and calm down. This is only a forum, not anything that you should freak out over and start throwing a tantrum. :argue:
