Thaksin Family Members receive jail sentences

Court sentences Pojaman to three years in jail
Court said Pojaman should have served as society's good example

The Criminal Court on Thursday found wife of ousted prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, guilty of intentionally avoiding tax payment of Bt546 million for the transfer of 4.5 million shares of the Shinawatra Computer and Communications' shares worth Bt738 million.

Found guilty in the same charges were her adopted brother; Bannaphot Damapong and her secretary Kanjanapa Honghern.

The Court sentenced Khunying Pojaman, Bannaphot to a total of three years in jail; two years for the charges relating to the conspiracy to evade tax and one year for giving falsified statements. Kanjanapa faces two years in jail.

It's a moot point whether she will actually go to prison. Certainly powerful forces are ranged against Thaksin and his family at the moment, but Thaksin's own popular support and vast resources ensure a dragging out of the enactment of the verdict. And of course, if Handley's book is to be believed, the whole dynamics of the situation could change very quickly in favour of Thaksin once the crown prince ascends to the throne. I wouldn't want to bet against him yet returning to a position more dominant than before.

    Now there's a convoluted sentence.

Does it mean that the Thaksin's are right now out of the country and ~ because of the sentence ~ will not return for fear of arrest and jail? Does it mean they are already in Thailand and be restricted from leaving? Maybe simply the Thai way of letting the Thaksin's save face by declaring them not able to leave Thailand, even though they have already left. TiT! :blackeye:

So where are they Luvthai ... in or out? Or is this just another example of Schroedinger's Cat?

    Cheers ...

Certainly they will keep her out of jail until her appeals are exhausted. But don't forget this is only the first of a multitude of cases against them.

I also have a feeling that their permission to leave the country could well lead to them not coming back. Does China have an extradition treaty with Thailand? Does England? I suspect they will retire to Hong Kong. The question will be whether or not they have enough money hidden out of the reach of the authorities.

With the amounts of cash that Toksin is and has been lavishing on Manchester City Football Club in the United Kingdom etc., I should think his overseas cash flow (accumulated over many years of corrupt dealings) is limitless.

I think sanook is right..with all that loot move abroad ( including those 60 Louis Vuiton suitcases ( genuine, unlike mine) stuffed full of cash that porters struggled to carry to his jet-the Thaksin family will be able to keep appeals going forever or until the political climate suits them again and it's declared a terrible mistake.

Is it possible they are allowed freedom of movement as a way of saying "get out of the country and if you come back then you will be imprisoned"? The resulting exile leaving the current crop of corrupt politicians to 'fill their boots' in the coming years without the threat of being overthrown by Thaksins supporters.

The British Press have reported that 'Toksin' has put out feelers to sell Manchester City Football Club, seems like he is short of money because of the going on's in Thailand. The F.A. have also said that if he is convicted of corruption then he will lose the club as the ownership rules for Premiership clubs disallow anyone who is convicted of such things from owning one.........I'm not holding my breath!
