Travellers to Laos warned to stay away from poultry

The Public Health Ministry Wednesday warned travelers to Laos to stay away
from poultry particularly those around farms in Vientiane where the highly pathogenic
H5N1 strain of bird flu had infected the country's first human.

The travel and health advisory regarding the bird flu situation in Laos was being handed out
right at the Nong Khai immigration checkpoint where locals and foreign tourists usually
passed for the capital of Laos, said Dr Thawat Suntrajarn, director general of the Disease Control Department.

    Marketing Propaganda

Bird flu is a problem anywhere in Asia, from Indonesia, Myanmar, and Thailand (especially around Kampheang Phet, Vietnam and China.

It is a good idea to stay away from anywhere where free range birds are around.

    Tourism is big business.

Just by coincidence i visted a Thai chicken farm last week in Udon Thani. very impressed with the controls in place, rubber boots and disinfected ( to protect me - not the birds lol) and totally sealed in an aircon shed to stop other birds getting in. ( and yes - thats a fox shirt!)

    Just a little humor, Oogie

I spent a couple of days this past November touring in Isaan.....based in Udon Thani....and it never occurred to me to visit (let alone get caught in a photograph proving I visited!) a chicken factory. Oogie, you either didn't get my list of interesting Isaan places to visit or you have way too much time on your hands....hehe.

P.S. Does the fourth guy on the left know he's in the Colonel's bucket next week?
