United Airlines changes rules: No account activity 18 months

Be aware that United Airlines has changed its frequent flyer program.

Accounts which have NO mileage activity within 18 months will lose the mileage...
regardless of how many miles you have in the account.
(it used to be 36 months - now reduced to 18 months of no mileage activity)

See this message from United Airlines:

    http://www.united.com/page/article/1,,52106,00.html .

    Q. When will my miles expire?
    A. As of December 31, 2007, miles will expire after 18 months of no activity on your account. For example, if there has been no activity since July 1, 2006, all miles in your Mileage Plus account will expire on December 31, 2007.

...and many more questions and answers about the change at United Airlines.

Years ago, I was a happy customer of United...but when they changed the rules - about 10 years ago - I was unaware of the change...
and I lost many miles. To say the least - United lost me as a customer and I have been an annual Platinum Elite frequent flyer with Northwest ever since.

Thanks for this Jim. I fly United a lot (but not the last trip) and had not heard this news. Guess it will be United or a Star Alliance airline next time ... i.e. before December 31/07.

    Cheers ...
Just another reason why I love living in Thailand

There are other ways to keep the miles activated such as buying flowers for your mom or dining at specific restaurants (join the dining rewards) when ur in the US or Canada. Other airlines did this last year, as well, only US Air comes to mind right now.

The trend, however, makes planning for things like retirement (build miles at work to enjoy in 10 years) difficult. Major corporations in America are showing no shame in changing the rules for everything from credit card agreements to mileage programs at any whim, any time, and considerable effort must now be sent to keep up with it all.

    Smiles,

You only need to have a mileage activity posted to your account once within every 18 months to keep your miles earned intact.
You do not have to fly the airline or its partners.
Any mileage activity - even from dinner out, buying flowers or office supplies, etc...
a simple purchase from their on-line listings of vendors will get you some miles and keep your account OK.
