There are now 34 restaurants in Bangkok with at least one Michelin Star, more than San Francisco, LA, or Chicago. The IconSiam and Asiantique shopping malls are more opulent than most you will find in North America, indicating the spending power of the local economy. Although many services are still being offered at good value, it is simply not the dirt-cheap city that it once was. $6,000 Baht is about $167 USD, which is not enough to buy even one hour of escort service in North America, let alone overnight. Given an international perspective, it is perhaps not surprising that prices are catching up where demand is high.

asntp...you need to venture away from your wealthy ghetto...Thai minimum wage is still only BHT360/day....there will be no shortage of affordable companions while this huge disparity exists....Id rather be poor & out in the west than in Thailand..you can keep your upscale malls.....I suspect the government social safety net does not amount to much

There is supposed to be free healthcare, but none of the boys i know had heard of it! However, as was said, sometimes Bangkok seems like London or worse. In Icon Siam there are plenty of goods that you can buy in London more cheaply, but it is busy. The Oriental et al are as expensive as New York.

All the boys I know who have tested positive for HIV seem to be aware of the free health care (30Baht) and are taking advantage of it. For HIV cases the non-Thais can also avail themselves of free or inexpensive meds.

Not qute accurate! Mid week the Mandarin Oriental in New York like many similar top chain hotels is around double Bangkok rates. Unsurprisingly, New York is much cheaper at weekends whereas Bangkok is more expensive. Supply and demand!
