    Thailand Unlocks Cannabis and Hemp

    Today, June 14th, 2022, I received the following email from the UK Government Thailand Travel Advice section:

    Local laws and customs

    Drugs

    Do not become involved with drugs of any kind. Possession of even very small quantities can lead to imprisonment. If you’re found guilty of being in possession of 20 grams of a Class A drug on exiting Thailand you risk receiving the death penalty. Amphetamines and ecstasy are regarded as Class A drugs and possession or trafficking carries the same penalty as heroin.

    As of 9 June 2022, private recreational use of cannabis is legal if THC content is below 0.2% by weight, but cannabis use in public places remains illegal. Cultivation, consumption, distribution and sales of cannabis products is legal, although some restrictions remain in place - you should check with the relevant local authorities if you are unsure. More information on usage and registration can be found on PR Thai Government.

    According to the Ministry of Public Health, cannabis and hemp are now delisted from Category 5 narcotic drugs, effective from 9 June 2022.

    Only cannabis and hemp plants that contain less than 0.2% THC are allowed for possession, planting, and selling, but the ministry must be informed via the PlookGanja app.

    The Government has a policy to liberalize the use of cannabis and hemp, with the following objectives:

    1. For medical purposes;
    2. For economic benefits;
    3. For people to have a choice in taking care of their own health.

    Re: Thailand Unlocks Cannabis and Hemp

    Finding marijuana with <0.2% THC is next to impossible.

    Most marijuana has around 15% THC - with some of the newer (more potent) herbs having 30%.

    The police can test to see if a person has marijuana in their system by testing either urine, blood, or hair samples, but those tests in-and-by-themselves will not detect the actual THC level of the marijuana. Additional lab tests would be required to determine these levels and personally I doubt that the Thailand police force has even the foggiest clue to how run these tests - let alone have the availability of testing labs to do this for them.

    The real humorous part (to me anyway) is that nobody would be the least bit interested in smoking pot with <0.2 % THC because they wouldn't get high - which is the ONLY reason people smoke pot.

    I see this new law as being nothing more than a Giant Loophole to provide ANOTHER conduit for the flow of "tea money".
