    Re: The Brink of War?

What would be great to see is once Finland and Sweden join NATO, maybe we could have NATO change the rules a bit and include other countries such as Taiwan, Japan, Australia, South Korea, and so on.

NATO is already over 50% of the world's military might, and not sure how much of a difference Sweden and Finland will make, but I'm sure it'll be noticeable as both are strong militaries. Then if we add those other countries, we're probably sitting around 65 - 70% of the world's military might in a single defense alliance.

That seems like it would make for a better deterrent against China invading Taiwan, because current trajectory looks like this Ukraine war will be slowed down considerably if not over by year's end. Then after the CCP have their little shindig later this year, it'll be time for China to invade Taiwan, because of course they will... they're already doing things like building life sized replicas of both, Taiwan naval bases and US naval bases based in Japan and Guam in large lakes within their entire, then their military blow the shit out of them for practice.

When you are fully vaccinated and boosted, but in quarantine anyway because your Covid-19 contract tracing app has indicated you have come within 2 meters of a confirmed COVID-19 case for more than two minutes over the past 14 days, and are awaiting test results, the mind may fixate on the most trivial things to pass the time.

Erdogan said Turkey will veto it untill Finland and Sweden will announce Kurdish organizations as a terrorist. Will see what Finland and Sweden will choose: principles or NATO.

Matt, do you forgot what US and your Canada recognize Taiwan as a part of China officially?

Do you expect what airbases are located right on Red Square??? Some airbases are in 300-500 km, for example Tu-22 bombardiers are based in Engels (735 km)

Turkey is just pandering to Putin and trying to stay on his good side. They're not actually going to veto Finland and Swedn's NATO application. It's just politics.

Not sure about Canada, but with the US gloves are off atm. US State Department recently removed all references to Taiwan being a part of China from its website. Small detail, but important one.

While the Ukraine war has been ranging, about 10 - 14 days ago China held huge war games close to Taiwan. And atm the US is currently holding large war games out there as well as a show of force to China as to what will happen if they invade. We all know China will invade Taiwan, because Xi is getting old and is drunk on power. Kind of like Putin.

Russia better be careful, sounds like they stand a decent chance of ~22,000 troops being cut off from supplies and stranded in Ukraine.

WRONG!! The USA does NOT recognise Taiwan as part of China officially. The so-called "Shanghai Communiqué" of 1972 simply acknowledged that "all Chinese on either side of the Taiwan Strait maintain there is but one China and that Taiwan is a part of China." The US "One China" policy refers to a United States policy which recognizes the PRC as the sole legal government of China, but only acknowledges, and does not endorse, the PRC position that Taiwan is part of China.

On May 5, 2022, the US State Department removed that statement, as well as one stating that it does not support Taiwanese independence from its US-Taiwan relations webpage. The PRC objected, and the US response was that "There is no change to our ‘one-China’ policy," noting that U.S.-Taiwan ties are "guided by" the Taiwan Relations Act, the three Joint Communiques, and the Six Assurances." On 29 June, 2021, the US House of Representatives passed a bill banning purchase of maps depicting Taiwan as part of China.

I believe that Canada follows a “One China Policy,” which acknowledges that there is only one Chinese government, does not recognise Taiwan as a sovereign state and does not maintain official government-to-government relations with Taipei. This also is different from Beijing’s “One China Principle” that insists Taiwan is a part of China and will be reunified with the mainland one day under the Chinese Communist Party.
