Wilkins Micawber is a clerk in Charles Dickens's 1850 novel David Copperfield. He is traditionally identified with the optimistic belief that "something will turn up."Wikipedia

I prefer Joe’s often quoted comment in Great Expectations “What larks, Pip”, a statement and the novel itself that came immediately to mind sitting adjacent to a roly-poly peroxide blond in G’s one evening (maybe 3 years ago) who was whining to his rather bored dining companion that “all those old expats in Bangkok are JEALOUS of my success because I know more than them”. He then went on to say he was headed back to Australia to get a business visa but he’d be back and he’d SHOW THEM”. Great expectations. “What larks, Pip”, I thought. And indeed something has turned up. Very Micawberish
