Huge factory fire in Bangkok the KO blow?

Mike Tyson once said "Everybody has a plan until they get punched in the face". Which is the KO blow for Thailand right now?
    • the failure of the vaccine rollout
    • the "Delta" variant
    • the huge factory explosion that's causing a 5km radius evacuation zone in Bangkok that includes Swampy Airport (also known as BKK) and a major hospital
I'm probably going for the explosion as the final blow but until now I'd thought it was Delta

    Jesus.

Any news on how harmful the chemicals that blew up are? Are we going to have another Bhopal, India on our hands or are we ok?

Ever the drama queen - it’s described as a “foam and plastics” factory.

Re: Huge factory fire in Bangkok the KO blow?

A report updated one hour ago reports a huge evacuation which suggests that the risks of either a secondary explosion or from toxic smoke is a real possibility.

Residents in Samut Prakan province who live within a five-kilometre (3.1-mile) radius of the factory, owned by a Taiwanese company, were being evacuated amid concerns over poisonous fumes from burning chemicals and the possibility of additional detonations.

Al Jazeera’s Tony Cheng, reporting from Hong Kong, said that firefighters are concerned about potential new explosions due to the presence of 20,000 litres of highly flammable chemicals and are struggling to bring the blaze under control.

Exactly, hence my previous concern. When 50 tons of chemicals blows up, well... it could be bad, or really bad.

The fire has been extinguished but residents within the 5km radius have been told to stay away for the moment to avoid any toxic smoke. The following is an infographic from the Bangkok Post:

High levels of styrene have been found in a 1km radius from the fire - https://www.thaipbsworld.com/high-le...e-recommended/

The media are reporting more than 80,000 people were affected.

Well, that's a bit open ended, isn't it? Affected as in may suffer from a slight headache, or affected as in probably inhaled a lethal amount of carciogens? Tad of a difference.

Re: Huge factory fire in Bangkok the KO blow?

Storing highly flammable materials close to a residential area has been a recipe for disaster in several countries? Remember Beirut? I have no idea how long this factory was in that location - probably since before BKK was constructed. But someone in government should have been monitoring any situation with flammable materials to ensure that they are moved further away as a city expands in size. Costly, certainly. But when lives are at stake, that level of cost should be immaterial. Of course when you factor in endemic corruption, well . . . it ain't going to happen.
