South Africa halted the rollout of AstraZeneca’s COVID-19 vaccinations after data showed it gave minimal protection

Researchers from the University of Witwatersrand and the University of Oxford said in a prior-to-peer analysis that the AstraZeneca vaccine provided minimal protection against mild or moderate infection from the so-called South African variant among young people.

P.S. Britain said the shot still stopped death and serious illness.

Protection against other variants AND protection against severe illness would be worth having in my view.
Also, if they already have a stock of the vaccines, are they just going to scrap them ? Makes no sense to me.

Finally, I believe both the Oxford and Sputnik vaccines are similar in concept, as they both lash a Coronavirus protein spike onto an adenovirus. Obviously the detail matters, but will Sputnik have similar results ?
