    News of the World

This subject was first mentioned in a post by arsenal in another place. I’ll be honest and say that when I first heard there was a film called News of the World about to be released on Netflix, I immediately jumped to the conclusion that it was about a well known British newspaper, which was closed in 2011 after 168 years following police investigations and subsequent arrests into phone hacking and corruption allegations. The newspaper specialised in celebrity gossip, scandals and lewd conduct stories, which earned itself the nickname ‘The News of the Screws’.

The News of the World was a weekly national red top tabloid newspaper published every Sunday in the United Kingdom from 1843 to 2011. It was at one time the world's highest-selling English-language newspaper, and at closure still had one of the highest English-language circulations.[4] It was originally established as a broadsheet by John Browne Bell, who identified crime, sensation and vice as the themes that would sell most copies.[5] The Bells sold to Henry Lascelles Carr in 1891; in 1969 it was bought from the Carrs by Rupert Murdoch's media firm News Limited. Reorganised into News International, a subsidiary of News Corporation, the newspaper was transformed into a tabloid in 1984 and became the Sunday sister paper of The Sun . . .

But it turns out News of the World actually refers to a western drama movie starring Tom Hanks, which was released in December 2020 and will be shown on Netflix on February 10, 2021. A video clip and details of which can be found below:

News of the World is a 2020 American Western drama film co-written and directed by Paul Greengrass, based on the 2016 novel of the same name by Paulette Jiles, and starring Tom Hanks and introducing Helena Zengel. The film follows a Civil War veteran who must return a young girl who was taken in by Native Americans as an infant to her last remaining family . . .

There is however a just announced TV series about the phone hacking by News International journalists that led to the closure of The News of the World.

It's titled Thank you and Goodbye, the headline on the last edition. Although don't hold your breath waiting to see it as I expect it will be a year before it hits the screens.

The News of the World saga makes me proud to be British. Not because the phone tapping and everything else happened. Because the open enquiry and the rule of law cleaned it up. It's not the way it would have been handled in Thailand or China or Russia. We are at last rid of Murdoch's influence at Sky.

“The famous story goes that when Winston Churchill was Prime Minister, he was woken one freezing February morning by a Downing Street aide bearing the shocking news that a male Tory MP had been caught having sex with a naked guardsman in St James’s Park.
“Noting that it had been the coldest night of the winter, Churchill is said to have remarked: ‘Makes you proud to be British.’

When Churchill was First Lord of the Admiralty he responded to a comment about “the proud traditions of the Royal Navy” with “There are only three - rum, sodomy and the lash”. As he wasn’t PM in 1987 he clearly isn’t, in goji’s imagination, “the finest British PM of the last century”.

Oops, just now read some other "related" posts. It seems I have inadvertently strayed into something. My post was only meant as little levity, otherwise I'm not involved. Carry on. LOL

Alas Murdoch couldn't stay out it for too long. He has now received approval to operate a 24 hours news service in the UK which is expected to be run along the lines of Fox New in the US.
