    The Serpent

This new TV mini-series is due to be broadcast on BBC One on New Year’s Day. The plot looks promising and members may be interested to know that the principal photography took place in Thailand.

The Serpent is an upcoming crime drama miniseries developed by Mammoth Screen for BBC One and Netflix. It is based on the 1976 arrest of Charles Sobhraj. It is set to premiere on BBC One on New Year's Day in 2021.

    Episode 1

Bangkok, 1975. Dutch diplomat Herman Knippenberg investigates the disappearance of a young couple who were last seen alive at the apartment of gem dealer Charles Sobhraj.

    Filming

Principal photography mostly took place in Thailand until late March. Filming resumed in Hertfordshire, England in August after a pause due to the COVID-19 pandemic.[6]

It should indeed be worth a look. Originally it was planned to shoot in Malaysia, as it was thought that the script might not be acceptable to Thai authorities, as it doesn't show them in a good light. However money talks and in the end it was agreed that it should be shot in Thailand. Even then filming there had not been completed when COVID struck and filming was suspended in March. The final week of filming that should have been in Thailand was subsequently filmed in the UK(it's a UK production).

The story of Sobrahj is indeed an extraordinary one, and I recall following it at the time while living in Bangkok in the late 70s. What I didn't realise until now is that we actually stayed in the same small apartment block in Saladeang at the same time. There but for the grace of god........!

Another Thai-related miniseries is “The flight attendant” on HBO Max. It’s about (all sad features) a female American flight attendant who drunkenly gets fucked by a non-Thai guy in Bangkok. The interesting section (or at least less sad) is then when she wakes up in the morning he’s dead beside her with his throat cut.

Charles Sobhraj, the infamous Bikini Killer, often stayed at The Malaysia Hotel, when in BKK.
I know there are some buffaloes on here, but I doubt any remember him from that hotel in 1975. Not unless you were on the hippie trail back then.
He also stayed at a Back Packers opposite, where the 7-11 is located now.
He's now in his late 70's wiling away his time in, I believe, a Kathmandu prison.

Charles Sobhraj (the Serpent) has been released from prison in Kathmandu after 20 years.
The 78-year-old was responsible for up to 20 murders across the Asian hippy trail, including some in Bangkok. He was a former resident of the infamous Malaysia hotel.

Merry Christmas & Happy New Year

What a great time to launch a mini-series about a mass serial killer.

I'm sure the kids will love it.
