Tragic:: but do you have sympathy for him?

Ian ‘Barney’ Mitchell-Barnes suffered catastrophic injuries when he fell from the balcony and had to have a foot amputated
A British dad has been left stranded in a hospital in Thailand with catastrophic injuries after falling from a sixth-floor balcony.
Ian Mitchell-Barnes, aged 56, broke his pelvis, both arms and both legs in the fall and has had to have one foot amputated.
The dad-of-two from Solihull, West Mids, has been in a Thai hospital for nearly three weeks now and is facing medical bills of at least £10,000.
His family have launched a JustGiving appeal after being told he won’t be allowed to leave hospital and return home to the UK until the fees are paid.
Ian, who grew up in Solihull and went to Tudor Grange School, had been living in Thailand since retiring from working for British Airways five years ago.

I don't know the full story.

However, it is reasonable to assume that he voluntarily retired at 51 from British Airways, rather than had enforced retirement due to ill health. Even if he was made redundant, the UK has had near full employment pre-covid, so anyone with a pulse could get a job.

If that assumption is correct -ie he has voluntarily retired at 51, then at 56 does not have the insurance or savings to cover a modest £10k medical bill, then I have zero sympathy.

Anyone who retires early should ensure they have funds in place.

it would appear to be a possible failed suicide bid. No need for him to worry about medical bills if he thought it was all going to end.
£10000 will never cover the medical bills and the flight back to the UK.

Bloody hell....just when he thought it couldn't get any worse....it has. Its only when I read or hear of other peoples problems do I realise how trivial my own issues are in comparison.
