The world of computers has some unsolved mysteries. One I came across recently is a video that has subtitles on youtube, does not have them when I download it. Or videos that don't have sound after downloading.
In your case, I would try what DoubleDutch suggested.
MP4, MKV, AVI files are containers which contain one or more video and audio streams encoded with video and audio codecs such as H.264, MPEG-3, AAC, AVC etc - think of it like a plastic box (container) with a cassette tape and a reel of film (encoded audio and video streams) inside
containers can usually contain a variety of codecs, hence one MVK container (file) may contain one type of video codec that is supported on a Windows PC but not supported on a smart TV, another MVK container may contain another type of video codec that is supported on a smart TV but not supported on a Windows PC, while yet another MVK container may contain yet another type of video codec that is supported on both the smart TV and a Windows PC or on neither, and some devices may not support MKV containers at all regardless of the codecs used. To add to the confusion the media player or other software you are using to view the file may support more containers and codecs than are supported by the actual device you are viewing on!
try a (free open source) tool like MediaInfo to find out what codecs are used inside the container you have, check the capabilities of the devices and software you use and try a (free open source) tool like Handbrake to convert the container/codecs you have to a container/codecs that will play where you want it to while you play with yourself or your new friend from Hornet - who will probably be impressed with your grasp of the technicalities
and yes christian subtitles are yet another stream that may be included in the container or in a separate file or hard encoded onto the video stream! and no sound probably means your device does not support the audio codec in the container

Wank is not an issue to take lightly, and having porn on large TV is so much more comfortable, than laptop on a table, next to sofa. Neck gets stiff after a while, head being turned at sharp angle to the left or to the right, in order to view laptop that's on the table. I can't imagine watching YouTube, downloaded movies, and porn on laptop, instead of large TV screen. That's what TV are for, movies!

that is why we have chromecast so at home or while traveling we don't even need the cable connecting our laptop (or phone/tablet) to the TV, and if we have a Roku connected to the TV we even have a nice remote to use to control this rather than fumbling with the PC mouse!
while porn is often the driving force behind both the development of, and our take up of, media handling technology advances, lack of stiff neck while wanking is just the start - for serious travelers to Thailand or elsewhere the city and temple tour videos are not the only thing that are much more enjoyable if you have packed your chromecast dongle/roku stick along with your lube and tissues!
and there is no reason why this should distract you from your own adventures, it is just a handy alternative!
