And of the humble space between words. Many years ago I saw a sign in a Bangkok shop window which read, 'You are allmost wellcome by our friendly staffs'.

A friend has sent me a photo of Australia's Defence Minister, so camp he was once described in parliament as a "mincing poodle":

    He's married with four children

    Village People moment.

I’m old enough to remember that when the Village People malarkey first came to the attention of the UK, local TV and radio stations were booking clergymen to tell the viewers and listeners about the good work VP were doing in publicising the YMCA.

The goodwill from Churches quickly gave way to open hostility as the real situation became known.

In a similar vein, the US Navy was apparently delighted when Village People asked permission to film the video for their song In the navy on board a US warship. Oblivious, it seems, to VP's trademark double entendres, the admirals thought that the video would be an excellent recruiting tool ("We want you, we want you, we want you as a new recruit!)

The end result probably appalled - or perhaps delighted some of - them: https://youtu.be/InBXu-iY7cw
"The fruits of peace and tranquility... are the greatest goods... while those of its opposite, strife, are unbearable evils. Hence we ought to wish for peace, to seek it if we do not already have it, to conserve it once it is attained, and to repel with all our strength the strife which is opposed to it. To this end individual[s]... and in even greater degree groups and communities are obliged to help one another... from the bond or law of human society." Thanks Marsilius for posting the YouTube clip and taking me down memory lane. It's been a while since I last saw the video. By the way, my favourite member of the group was the Native American, Felipe Ortiz Rose.

I remember the story, I think in "rolliong Stone" , when the Admirals found out what the Village People were all about. Hilarious.

By the way, if you thought that In the navy made life on a US warship look somewhat camp, there's another video that makes the same point - but even more so! - about the Russian fleet. Admirers of virile young matelots will love this one - and positively swoon, in all probability, for the charismatic cabin boy with the winning smile who certainly seems popular with his shipmates and who gets a solo spot from 4'30" onwards.
