    Saphan Kwai

Someone mentioned the old Charming bar from years ago and it reminded me of the gay area there. There was a time when I stayed in that area just because the bars were so very goo. All host bars but lovely guys, mostly in college and earning cash. I have such fond memories of Charming, Adam and Aladdin.

I have not heard anything about it for a long time. Does anyone have current information?

I can't offer any information as I've sideways avoided that area after being told it was strictly Thai for Thai and that farang weren't especially welcome there.

If things have changed, I would also be interested in hearing about it.

Christian, do you have any up to date info?

Farangs were always welcome! Other than the movie theater Charming is gone, The Bee High go go is gone, some gay Karaokes near where Bee High used to be.

No, it's an area of Bangkok adjacent to the Chattuchak weekend market area. Used to be wonderful and, yes, Farang were always welcome.

Going back to the early 1990s, Midnight Cowboy was always an especially enjoyable bar - with about 20-30 boys on stage.
"The fruits of peace and tranquility... are the greatest goods... while those of its opposite, strife, are unbearable evils. Hence we ought to wish for peace, to seek it if we do not already have it, to conserve it once it is attained, and to repel with all our strength the strife which is opposed to it. To this end individual[s]... and in even greater degree groups and communities are obliged to help one another... from the bond or law of human society." [Marsilio dei Mainardini (c.1275-1342), Defensor Pacis]

Thank you! I have been trying to remember that name. The nightly show was fantastic - not lipsyncing Ladyboys - but Thai myths and legends told by costumed handsome boys - acres of them ! What memories

    Talking about Pradipat:
Number (and quality?) of gay venues in that area has been in a long, slow decline. Details are scattered on my blog and http://llz.blogspot.tw/

The last gogo bar Be High closed about 2015. Now there are only several karaoke left, which is not my style so I can't report anything recent.

Saphan Kwai more general: 39 underground sauna is one of my favorites. Friends' reports about the nearby porn cinema vary, I never had luck in there (nor in any other porn cinema). There are plenty of all-male massages nearby, which seem to do good business.

    Red face Re: Saphan Kwai

    Hi Christian,

just wanted to say your latest blog post was quite a surprise! I have always enjoyed reading your unique take on things and the detailed information you provide, I'll be very interested to read how your new adventure in Taiwan goes (also being a place that I haven't visited yet myself, but is on my list to see in the next few trips to that region).

    All the best!

Yes! I wish some one could re-create such a bar...but perhaps the times have changed and this would now be impossible
