It's most likely a short nick-name he was given as a child without reference to anything foreign or otherwise.
The boy's Cheu Linn is 'Jap' and that's all there's to it.

No problem for him getting a furniture shop to allow him take a picture.
All he has to say is "for show falang, so he send me money".
