Hmmm why is Joe an idiot? He can spend his money however he likes.
In this case the father still has the motorbike, is presumably getting pleasure from it and Joe himself is content.
If we all think of the cash we have totally squandered on boys for meaningless crap which they lost or sold the minute we were on the plane, then Joe's gift seems quite sensible
