From Brief lives by John Aubrey (1626-1697):
This Earle of Oxford, making of his low obeisance to Queen Elizabeth [I], happened to let a Fart, at which he was so abashed and ashamed that he went to Travell, 7 yeares. On his returne the Queen welcomed him home, and sayd, My Lord, I had forgott the Fart.
"The fruits of peace and tranquility... are the greatest goods... while those of its opposite, strife, are unbearable evils. Hence we ought to wish for peace, to seek it if we do not already have it, to conserve it once it is attained, and to repel with all our strength the strife which is opposed to it. To this end individual[s]... and in even greater degree groups and communities are obliged to help one another... from the bond or law of human society." And talking of royalty, this sequence purports to show a massive fart on the balcony of Buckingham Palace. The Duke of Edinburgh has allegedly just let rip, with the following result. Her Majesty maintains her dignity. No doubt she'd smelled it all before
