"Better days" must be one of the great understatements!

The question has been asked before, and there may be little point bringing it up again but why is it that so many bars have been closing down? We know all about the apps and there now being less need for the boys to meet customers in a bar. But there surely has to be more than that. I remember when Krazy Dragon opened. It had a gimmick and despite the bar being overlarge, I believe it worked and was popular for a while. But then the management seemed to lose control of what was happening inside. The boys stopped circulating around around the tables, either preferring to concentrate on one or two, or spending ages chatting with their mates behind the bar. The bar manager or whoever was in control clearly had lost control and was bored. The quality of the boys also went downhill even before the bar was sold. Thereafter with the second owner it seemed to nosedive.

Happy Boys just outside Sunee seemed a fun place with quite a few customers whenever I was in town. Not to everyone's taste, understandably. but it had its own gimmick which seemed to work. Both bars are now dead.

The other night my friends and I actually had a good time in one of the gogo bars. The boys were fun to sit with, there was no great pressure to keep buying drinks (although we did) and we were happy to part with pretty generous tips. We were not planning to off anyone and again there was little pressure to do so. Yet there were few other customers over the 90 minutes or so we spent there.

Is it only the apps? Are bar managers simply inept at their jobs? Do owners really care any more? How do they start bringing the fun element back into their establishments?

Sunee died because the sleeze factor dissapeared with more and more police raids and exposes by the foriegn press, that was the draw when draw of sleeze ended so did the falang traffic. Boystown suffered from unrealisic pricing of drinks and a general lack of gay tourism.

Sunny Boys in Suny had its brief moment in the sun a couple of years ago.....low prices and twinks actually dancing. I looked in twice; on one occasion it was very busy, on the second, there were no seats available and I left.
Then it suddenly and quickly declined and closed. Wasn't it a business model that others could try?

At it's best Sunee was perhaps the most exciting couple of gay oriented streets in the entire world, The Corner Bar under Gary and then Michael was THE place to sit and people watch as different vistas evolved out of the different aspects.

I think we tend to forget sometimes that we are talking about commercial sex bars that are of interest to only a limited sub-section of the "gay" community

I can think of many "gay oriented streets" in the world that had at their best or still have today a very exciting variety of gay pubs, show bars, dance venues, saunas and sex venues as well as cafes, coffee shops and restaurants that offered/offer fabulous people watching that probably most gays would prefer over a view of older western gents with their younger Thai "boy special" in tow

I am not saying that Sunee did not have or deserve its 15 minutes of fame within the gay thailand forum community, but most exciting in the entire gay world?

Would you like to name any of these mythical streets - because I can't think of any

For me there was no place like Sunee then or now, my memories go back before Gary had the corner bar when it was called the Sports bar, when Micheal had the Corner Bar in my opinion the slow demise of Sunee had already begun.

bkkguy: Restaurants and cafes and shows are not gay orientated, they are enjoyed by everyone so if you're talking about areas of London, New York or Amsterdam then you're not comparing like with like. Besides as any Sunee old timer will tell you, it was never just about the sex. You'd meet fantastically interesting people and have wonderful conversations and an hour after meeting someone for the first time the two or three or four of you were riding around Pattaya on motorbikes looking for some nightclub or karaoke bar someone had said was full of hot offable boys. Fun my friend, pure and simple fun. The place hopped and buzzed and jived and thrilled and shocked and seduced and repelled and delighted. It's probably gone forever and we shall miss it's undeniable chutzpah.

P,S Given the choice and knowing the available fare that was there I would rather it died for good than came back in that form.

I believe it was operating on borrowed money so not a good business model.

When newbees ask what was Sunee like 12 years ago I say there was the good, the bad, and the ugly, as well as snake charmers, elephants and characters straight out of a Fellini movie and I wouldn't have missed it for the world.
