With the one-child-per-family policy in operation for more than 3 decades, China has a huge population imbalance with about 33 million more males than females. Long-held cultural beliefs mean men must marry and they and their families will look after their parents in old age. Although homosexuality is not a criminal offense, many gay men marry, some to lesbians, to avoid the social stigma of being either gay or single for too long.

It’s often been claimed on gay websites that one way to ‘solve’ the problem is to permit more openness in gay relationships. This week a Court has ruled against two men wishing to register their marriage.. But this has only fuelled a social media campaign with members of the LGBT community openly pledging not to enter into sham marriages with straight people. The campaign includes gay individuals posting selfies along with slogans, including this young man Peng Peng –

- as well as parents of gay children like this mother openly stating support for gay marriage.

The campaign is led by the Chinese LGBT Rights Group Pflag China. How far the government will let this run is open to question. It surely realises it has to do something about the massive population imbalance. The more signing up for this campaign, the more problems there will be for the sham marriage solution.
