Exclamation A warning about travel insurance & Cambodia

A timely warning about the risks not only of being insured but being insured with a knowledgeable insurer in Move To Cambodia - http://www.movetocambodia.com/practi...nce-nightmare/

Although it does end up being a promo for one particular insurer it's still worth reading.

A timely warning indeed! I am horrified at the number of people I come across on my travels who have no travel insurance at all. Even some Thais I know travel to the USA with a policy that gives them up to Bt. 1.5 million of cover. That may be fine for many countries, but $43,000 is not going to cover anything serious in the USA.

I have heard of similar cases in the past where an insurance company takes ages to agree to cover medical costs. For that reason I take out an annual policy directly with a specialist travel insurance company - never go through a broker! - and make sure I have their numbers with me at all times. And to be safe, I have enough credit on the 2 or 3 cards I travel with to pay a decent chunk of the costs in case of communications difficulties.

In fact, there can be other emergencies - e.g. major travel delays resulting in having to book flights at full cost and an overnight hotel if a connection to a budget carrier is missed. That happened to me 3 years ago in Germany and the insurers did pay the full cost once they had the relevant paperwork from the airlines and receipts. But no way would they pay that claim up front.

It looks like World Nomads has very good rates, but unfortunately for me, the age limit is 70.

Anyone know of a company that will insure me for a few more years, say up to age 80?

Sorry Bob, but your advanced age means that the leaches who inhabit the World o' Insurance will treat you as being pretty much in the same category as a sub-prime mortgage loanee, (Tranche 15).
In 2006 they would've been all over you, but not anymore.
Traveller Jim's in that racket ... oops, I meant "business" ... perhaps he could give you some advice.

Smiles, I am not surprised by your response. I did not actually expect any underwriters to be interested in someone 75 yrs old. CIGNA showed up on my screen, inviting me to call them. I just sent them an email asking if they would insure someone of my age. Never got a response.

Going off topic: I have long, and unsuccessfully been trying to identify any of the purported perks of seniority. My 74 year old sister recently forwarded these to me:

    1. Kidnappers are not very interested in you
    2. In a hostage situation, you are likely to be released first
    3. No one expects you to run - anywhere
    4. People call at 8pm and ask: "Did I wake you?"
    5. People no longer view you as a hypochondriac
    6. There is nothing left to learn the hard way
    7. Things you buy now won't wear out
    8. You can eat dinner at 4pm
    9. You can live without sex but not without your eyeglasses
    10. Your supply of brain cells is finally down to manageable size

Thanks for the morale builder Bob. I'm only 5 years behind you, and 'things' are on the cusp of breaking down.

One quick search on the internet produced this company -

    http://www.moneysupermarket.com/trav...ance/over-75s/

I have never heard of it but it might be worth checking.
