    Immigration hotline for work permit, visa queries

    Bangkok Post Monday 19 June 2006

    IMMIGRATION

    Hotline for work permit, visa queries

    The Immigration Bureau has opened a call centre to answer questions by foreigners about their visas and work permits. Staff will also respond to queries about immigration regulations and receive complaints about immigration issues, bureau commander Pol Maj-Gen Surapon Tanakoses said.
    The new service has resulted from the cabinet's decision to promote ''e-government''.

    The idea is to make sure the public can gain access to information more quickly and efficiently with the help of information technology. The telephone 1111 hotline is open 24 hours a day. The cost is three baht a call.

    Press "one" if you're a sex tourist;
    Press "two" if you're an illegal English teacher with a Khaosan Road degree;
    Press "three" if you're a boiler room telemarketer;
    Press "four" if you're a soccer hooligan;
    Press "five" if you're a pedophile piano teacher;
    Press "six" if you're a visa-running loser running away from chronic failure in your own country.

    it is good to see that the Immigration Bureau has such a good grasp of concepts like e-government, one wonders what marvel of IT they will use next - visa rejections via carrier pidgeon?

    One hopes they do not rush off in the wrong direction and make this available via email, or even worse restructure their web site so you can actully find information on it! online visa applications could be interesting, particularly if they follow the Lottery Office's example - their "online lottery ticket machines" are not actually online!

    Yes, what a wonderful idea! Perhaps I could advise them how to catch expat businessmen with "profitable" businesses, who never seem to show any profit on the books.
