Ordination Procession Srisatchanalai district of Sukhothai province The Si Satchanalai ordination procession on elephant back is a colourful traditional ceremony of the Tai Puan tribal people who settled in Ban Haat Siao village in Si Satchanalai district. The tradition, which dates back some 150 years, features a spectacular procession of some 20 to 30 young Buddhist novices dressed in elaborate costumes. Each rides on the back of a beautifully-decorated elephant as the procession makes its way to Wat Haat Siao temple for the mass ordination ceremony. When the procession arrives at Wat Haat Siao, Pho Thao (village elder) helps the novices from their mounts and leads them to worship.
