I know this is fairly old news but it's quite a sweet story and so nice that same sex relationships and marriages (though not fully legalised yet) are becoming more and more mainstream...

The guy who rather publicly proposed to his partner in this photo is the son of Australian home loan entrepreneur and billionaire, John Symond.

Wedding of 2013 set as Stephen Symond and Ed Smith release invitations
The Daily Telegraph December 31, 2012 12:00AM

THE son of Aussie Home Loans founder John "We'll save you" Symond will be married in the new year in what will likely be the wedding of 2013 (no offence to Jennifer Hawkins, Erin McNaught, Rachael Finch and anyone else walking down the aisle).

The invitations for the nuptials of Stephen Symond and marketing executive Ed Smith are out, announcing the big day as February 18.

The location is the $50 million, four-storey Point Piper waterfront where dad John lives.

The home comes complete with an elevator, smoking room, cloak room and overlooks the Harbour Bridge and the Opera House.

It was here the couple - who have been together four years and live in Rose Bay - were engaged on Symond's 28th birthday last year.

Smith got on bended knee in front of their closest friends and family and as he popped the question heart-shaped fireworks erupted from a barge sitting in the harbour.

Smith gave Symond a five-carat diamond. Originally the pair were going to be married in Las Vegas, but have since decided to have a bucks weekend in Sin City instead.

Symond said last year that the wedding is no way a political statement.

"I've met the man I love, the person I want to share my life with, the person that makes me feel safe, makes me laugh and brings the best out in me," he said.
