"Do Not Publish" Photo of Diana to be Sold at Auction

A photo showing a rare glimpse into the life of Lady Diana before she married into the royal family will be up for auction later this month.

The photo formerly belonged to the former British newspaper, the Daily Mirror. It has the words, "not to be published" written on it in grease pencil, commonly used by photo editors. Diana appears to be lying in a bed with a male seated behind her. A bottle of Johnnie Walker Whisky is on the window sill next to her.

The date, Feb. 26, 1981, is written on the back side of the photo. Caren Archive, the photo's current owner, bought part of the photo library of the Daily Mirror.

On Feb. 23 of that year, Diana moved into Buckingham Palace, at just 19 years old. The next day, the palace had made an official statement about the engagement.

She married Charles, Prince of Wales, on July 29, 1981 at St. Paul's Cathedral.

The photo will be auctioned as part of a photography sale by RR Auctions of Amherst, N.H., from Jan. 17 to 24.

Eric Caren, the owner of Caren Archive, said he does not know who the man in the photo is for sure, though many have suggested the man is Diana's brother, Charles Spencer.

"If it is her brother, it is more curious why they squashed it," Caren said of the Daily Mirror's editors. "It's not an unflattering shot. It's a more intimate shot."

Bob Livingston of RR Auctions said the Daily Mirror was likely uncomfortable publishing a photo of the future Princess of Wales appearing to be in the arms of another man. He told the Daily Telegraph a similar photo could be sold for $1,000 but because of the words, "not to be published" on it, he expects it to be sold at a much higher price.

Also to be auctioned are a 1988 news photograph of Princess Diana observing a marriage conflict resolution seminar, an original photo of the Beatles playing in the 1960s and a studio portrait of Albert Einstein.

I understood that any reference to any royal family anywhere in the world could bring down the wrath of the Thai authorities as it might imply royals are as other people are - human. This reference to Saint Diana of Blessed Memory is hardly a flattering one.

Thank you for your opinion but the Rules and Guidelines suggest Thai Royals not Royals all over the world, and there is nothing offensive about this picture. Early and before she married and became a Royal (I believe I am correct but maybe not) she is pictured with a young man who is believed to be her brother. Also clear to me that the brother is either reading a book or magazine as it is in his hand and his focus is shown to be on that item. I see nothing offensive in that photo but again thank you for your opinions.

Sawatdee is an open and free Board and it's Members are encouraged to voice opinions on the widest range of topics.
There are however, a few topics or postings which may ~ under a 'worst case scenario' ~ put the very existence of the Board in jeopardy. These proscribed topics or postings are:
The encouragement of under-age sex. This does not mean the discussion of those found to be those arrested for such offenses.
Discussion of the Thailand Royal Family, if that discussion includes criticism, disparagement, insulting language, or accusations.
Libellous or potentially libellous statements or accusations against named individuals, businesses, or insitutions.
    Pornographic images.

There are also Rules and Guidelines about issuing a complaint on a moderation decision and I believe you will also find how to do that properly in the Rules and Guidelines rather thn the way you did it.

Oh and PS, I always thought of Diana as a beautiful, charming and giving person. She gave to AIDS causes and many others around the globe. She was one of the most gracious, dearest women I have had the pleasure of reading about and I see nothing unflattering or disrespectful in that picture. I, like the writer found it to be a heart warming glimpse of her in her natural surroundings and enviroment. I only wish i had the money to buy what will undoubtedly cost a fortune.

Maybe the problem is the "product placement" of the bottle of Johnny Walker in the photograph?

I see absolutely nothing wrong with the bottle being there. There is no idication of who is drinking or when it was drank last time. For all you know there is another roommate sharing the flat who drinks a shot sometime. Maybe her brother drinks a nite cap? Who is to say? She is a beatutiful woman and I am glad to see this picture of her. Someone think otherwise?

I wasn't aware that I was "issuing a complaint on a moderation decision". Can you point out the moderating decision that I was complaining about?

Challenging the Rules & Guidelines as to whether or not picture violates the Rules is obviously a moderation decision. even if it is my own post.
Thank you for coming by after so long even if only to check to make sure I am towing the line. Drop by anytime. :hello2:

I've always assumed you are a law unto yourself.

I know you struggle with the English language at times so let me help you and point out that the phrase is "toe the line" and in your sentence would be written "toeing the line".
Your "smilie" :hello2: I see has been altered from your original post which you have edited. Originally you had included :violent1: which I think is much more typical of your usual style. How do I know this? RSS

Wonderful, I edited my post which is allowed. Everyone is allowed to or am I not part of everyone? Listen Sooty, if your only purpose of visiting SGF every couple of months is to see what I am up to and challenge my decisions, well I think you have the incorrect board. Take care. :hello2:
