for subscribers contemplating taking the overland route from Thailand to Siem Reap for Angkor Wat, the motorway from the frontier at Poipet to Siem Reap is now open, and the notorious unmade 'dancing road' is history. What was once a five hour slog from the frontier is now driveable in 2 hours, and the complete overland journey from Pattaya can be done in less than 8 hours, allowing an hour and a half at Aranyaprathet/Poipet for immigration formalities and airconditioned lunch/gambling at one of the casinos in no-man's land. Cambodian visas must be obtained in advance at the consulate in Aranyaprathet before leaving Thailand as they are not issued at the frontier immigration desk. A change of vehicle at the frontier is still necessary. If anyone has succeeded in driving across in a private car recently perhaps they would let us know how it was done.
