What was the best go-go bar in Bangkok?
What was the best go-go bar in Bangkok? What memories do you have?
Midnight Cowboy at its peak in the early 90s was fantastic. It often had 20-30 handsome, athletic guys and no boring lady-boy shows. The guys were so attractive that it was difficult to choose a partner. Sometimes I would leave with two or three. The friendly British transvestite who worked as the mama-san had an acerbic wit, but would leave you alone if you just wanted to enjoy the eye candy. Why can't someone replicate this bar? Why did it close?
Barbiery [spelling?] at its peak in the late 1980s {and early 90s} was also great. It had many handsome guys and good mix of muscular types and athletic twinks. Why and when did it close? It always seemed packed, perhaps too packed.

Re: What was the best go-go bar in Bangkok?
I can't go back that far - but I always liked Screw Boy (before it closed, moved across the road to Fresh Boys I think - and then re-opened)
The boss at that time - who I knew as Porn - knew "my type" and whenever I arrived, if he did not have a boy on the staff to fit the bill would be sure to have one the next night. He also gave me gifts and the occasional free drink. Of course I was spending a lot of cash (maybe 3 bottles of JWBL a night in those days) - but the point is I've spent that in lots of other places and not got so much as a "hello" from the boss so I appreciated it.
I have 2 stories from those days:
1. As is still the case I believe, the Water supply in Silom is not 100% reliable and one evening I went into Screw Boy and the water went off at one point. They had a DJ at that time (from Dundee of all places) and he made the following completely serious announcement:
"The water has gone off and the toilets cannot be flushed - so if anybody needs a pee it's fine but if you need a shit please come to the bar and ask for a carrier bag"! Over the years I've tried to visualise (haven't practiced I assure you) on how you could actually hold a carrier bag open and shit in it at the same time but to date I still can't figure it out :D
2. Was in Screw Boy one night and Porn was doing his owner stuff when his wife walked in and started battering him with hands and fists and anything else she could find. It was better fun than any cabaret :D

Re: What was the best go-go bar in Bangkok?
Barbiery during that period was way out in front. My second would be Apollo in Soi 4 which I believe did not last much beyond the mid 1980s. I'm not sure why Barbiery went downhill, but it must have started long before it moved to its new location on the 3rd or 4th floor of a building across the road from Nature Boys. That was a big space but nothing was as good as the original Suriwong location. It never had any atmosphere, had nothing like the number of customers, only a fraction of the number of boys and the shows were boring. No wonder it didn't last long after that. Third has to be the original Twilight. Lots of boys, cheap drinks and a fair amount of sleaze!
-
Re: What was the best go-go bar in Bangkok?
Midnight Cowboy and Barbiery were my favourites too
-
Re: What was the best go-go bar in Bangkok?
Barbiery was number one and Apollo was good too!
I fell in love my very first visit to Barbiery and so I was "committed" but we did party a lot and went to every gay bar and disco almost nightly. Sometimes, when we stayed out real late we would end up hooking up with alot of the other guys at Barbiery and then we would go someplace and eat.
I know the love of my life got his job because he had a cousin who was a go go boy. I never saw him at Barbiery because he got offed literally every night and sometimes two three times a night. Yeah, he was a stunner!
Its not hard to do the math on that and figure out real quick that that made Barbiery a lot of money and made the boys lots of money. When the bar and the boys are making money you are going to naturally have a really fun show and a really fun atmosphere!
Sadly, in this business, sometimes bigger isn't always better....

So true. Apollo was a small bar with a great staff and boys who were so friendly and such fun even when strutting their stuff on the runway when naked. I was madly in love with the barman! Barbiery was also pretty small if you discount the boys' gym area to the right as you went in. Twilight seemed bigger but then it did not have a stage or catwalk within the audience area - that was tiny and stuck behind the bar. Even so, the atmosphere at week-ends when it would be packed mostly with Thais made it great fun.

Re: What was the best go-go bar in Bangkok?
Not really a GoGo bar as such (although some impromptu displays) but does anybody remember My Way?
I always found the boys wanking off whilst wearing their street clothes much more erotic than in briefs or even nude
-
Re: What was the best go-go bar in Bangkok?
Yes, I recall My Way- I assume you are referring to the Bangkok, not the Phuket one. It was the only bar in a dead-end soi near the Pan Pacific Hotel (I think that was its name.) I went there on my first trip to Bangkok. A very nice guy accompanied me to a scuzzy short-time room. In those days I was too shy to take him back to my my hotel. My only other memory is that the go go bar had a screen showing gay porn of questionable legality.
-
Re: What was the best go-go bar in Bangkok?
Yes - the BKK one.
You're right - it was not easy to find the bar and the way I discovered it was that an English guy who seemed to be involved in the Bangkok Best Boys operation came into our company, had a few drinks and offered to take us to it.
There was no porn of that nature when I was ever there. The owner died (I think his band was Tony or Harry or some such) and it all went to pot after that with the staff having to send out to 7-Eleven for even a beer
-
Re: What was the best go-go bar in Bangkok?
I never visited Apollo or Twilight, but visited My Way several times I think.
Was it the small bar with a central stage in a small alley way? Had some great sexy dancers.
Jupiter at its peak also was great--when it was on the ground floor of the sleazy hotel across from Jupiter's present location.
The old Jupiter was much better and had better looking guys.
-
Re: What was the best go-go bar in Bangkok?
Yes My Way was small. I think it was up and running by the mid-1980s if not before. I also recall - I hope correctly - that the boys there were quite amazing pole dancers and that the sleaze came quite a bit later.
-
Re: What was the best go-go bar in Bangkok?
what is ''best'' probably also differs for most.
But agree with Midn Cwby as nr 1-to add: In the times of the ORIGinal location and when that Singy owner/mamanger (mr John?) was running it. Later it also moved to grander place in same soi-this is now all built over by a giant condo.
The old Barbiery-along Suriwong, about opposite from soi Twilite, moved to that grand new place in the soi with Golden Cock just BECAUSE it was doing so well and thought it had to expand!
My personal own best memories-but again its only personal- was a place named [King?] Diamond (or so) on the other corner from Golden Cock-changed names several times, nothing grand, nothing flashy, just that I had the best luck there.
No place was that hard to find-again that old standby in times before www; a thing called BOOK-TMOT=The men Of Thailand-with detailed maps and listings.

Re: What was the best go-go bar in Bangkok?
I still firstly consult the print edition of Spartacus when considering anywhere new and then follow its info up on the www.
The good thing about Spartacus listings is the capital R for Rent in the bar descriptions - so you don't waste time leering over unavailable eye candy.
Having said that, it certainly used to (and still may be) the case that NONE of the gay bars in Thailand were annotated R - which is clearly somewhat ridiculous  but I've found the information reliable all over the rest of the world.
The snag is its an expensive book to renew each year but you can always pick up last years edition on eBay at a good discount.

Oh you poor thing Scottish! I have a few slices of pizza left over from last night. I'll stick them on eBay too and send you a link.

Re: What was the best go-go bar in Bangkok?
The carriage / delivery fee might be expensive though - you know seeing how he's in Thailand and all just now - just in case you missed that point for future reference ?! :-)

Now that is a good thing. However, I've found a fair number of bars in there which are no longer open, often after a 20 minute walk, although it must be said, mostly in places where there are few gay bars and none with the letter R.
-
Re: What was the best go-go bar in Bangkok?
Yes like all print editions u need to cross reference. Having said that I've found plenty of web guides far more out of date than Spartacus.

A friend from Germany had a Spartacus with him last year. The Spartacus was the 2015 edition, and the data must have been researched in 2014. I had a look at the Bangkok section and found so many changes that it's not worth consulting Spartacus for Bangkok. Better check up-to date websites or ask on the forums or ask friends.
I don't know if gay venues elsewhere are less volatile.
-
Re: What was the best go-go bar in Bangkok?
Christian - if good old Herr Bruno's Spartacus is so out of date in relation to BKK/Thailand, isnt there an obvious opportunity for a well-travelled fellow German to possibly carve out a nice little sideline there, updating it for him?
-
Re: What was the best go-go bar in Bangkok?
In the 1980s, Spartacus was more often than not totally useless for Thailand listings. As for Tokyo, it was worse than useless!

Christ I'm sorry I mentioned it now

Re: What was the best go-go bar in Bangkok?
Forget gogo bars.
The best place to pick up guys is massage place called MyHero. It made my trip to Bangkok memorable.
At MyHero ask for Nut. He will provide the best service.
Don't be fooled by the gallery pictures on the website, the guys are much more handsome and toned than the ones they show.

This is the third, yes third, thread I've read this morning where you say the exact same thing, It's really rather boring.

I assume you didn't drink those three bottles per night alone?
In 2013, my toilet was blocked for over a day. For lack of other choice, I used plastic bags for the activity quoted above. It didn't pose any difficulty. Then, short of calling a technician, I managed to solve the blockage with soda and hot water. That leads to the observation that basically (here I mean the chemical term, the opposite of acidic) hydrolyzed poo has a characteristic smell.

Re: What was the best go-go bar in Bangkok?
I remember Harry's bar at the end of Silom soi 4. In the mid 80's this bar was fantastic and packed every night with handsome boys, many of whom just students in search of a "sugar daddy" for the night or just fun for nothing.
Also Barbiery, Twilight and Narcissus (inside a parking lot in Pat Pong soi 2) were great.
-
Re: What was the best go-go bar in Bangkok?
I loved that bar. It was still terrific in the late 80's and early 90's
-
Re: What was the best go-go bar in Bangkok?
I had forgotten about Harries===always good luck there.
-
Re: What was the best go-go bar in Bangkok?
Harry's bar was terrific. It was a late night spot where at the end of the night, when Rome Club and all the other bars closed, everybody would meet, including bar boys that enjoyed themselves after work. But it was on Silom Soi 2, not Soi 4.

Harry's and Garden bar both great. But neither were gogo. At that time only Barbeiry??

The best go-go bar in Bangkok was the first one I visited 19 years ago but I forget the name and the location.

Indeed, and at closing time we would all traipse through a door at the rear of the bar to Ciro's till the early hours.

Same here.
A tout accosted me in the Patpong night market and took me to a bar in Soi Twilight. As soon as we entered a gogo boy approached me with a big smile grasping his massive member over his briefs, squeezing it enthusiastically.
The rest is history, as they say!

Exactly who did the squeezing? :-)

Re: What was the best go-go bar in Bangkok?
My first visit was 1987 and I would be hard put to pick between Super Lex, Golden Cock, and Barbiery. All Amazing . Golden Cock was special as it opned early and gave me a refugee from the after noon rain of the rainey season.

It still does, if you pay your cards right.

Re: What was the best go-go bar in Bangkok?
Blue Star in Soi Twilight provides the best memories for me. In 1997 it had two troupes, one of twinks and the other more muscular, and they each danced for about twenty minutes at a time. There was a lot of nudity.
This was the place where I dropped my wallet, went outside and was chased along the soi by a waiter wishing to return it.
