ItтАЩs uncertain at the moment how the military junta intends to enforce its ban of alcohol sales within 300 metres (500 metres has also been talked about) of educational institutions. Numerous critics opposed to the ban have said that it would gravely affect business and diminish tourism revenue, but so far the potential benefits of the action itself, which is ostensibly to sway young folks from drinking тАУ have not been called into question. The junta seemed to back-peddle after the initial pronouncement of the order, but then said the ban would be enforced arbitrarily тАУ based on the, тАЬappropriateness of the situation,тАЭ according to Saman Footrakul, director of the Alcohol Beverage Office, as reported by Khaosod.... Migrant Rights Activist Indicted in Thailand for Defamation
BANGKOK (DPA) - An activist who reported on alleged rights abuses at a Thai pineapple processing plant was indicted for defamation and committing computer crimes by the Thai Criminal Court Monday.

Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha launched a stinging rebuke Tuesday against political party leaders who oppose the formation of a "crisis panel" in the new draft charter.

Forty years ago left-wing political parties in Thailand managed to win 14.4% of the vote or 2.5 million votes in the General Election of 1975. Three main тАЬLeftтАЭ parties were represented in parliament. They were the Socialist Party, the Socialist Front and Palang Mai (New Force). These parties won many seats in the north and north-east of the country.
