Re: Coronavirus - Thailand
Having just finished watching the 2011 film, Contagion, starring Marion Cotillard, Matt Damon, Laurence Fishburne, Jude Law, Gwyneth Paltrow, Kate Winslet and Bryan Cranston, I was surprised how closely the fictional account of a global pandemic mirrors the current, real Covid-19 pandemic. Allowing for dramatic license, the similarities between the storyline and real life were striking.
Quote:
The plot concerns the spread of a virus transmitted by fomites, attempts by medical researchers and public health officials to identify and contain the disease, the loss of social order in a pandemic.

One issue discussed in the film, which has not yet arisen, is what to do when a vaccine is eventually found. How will it be distributed and who will be first to receive the vaccine?
Should priority be given to key workers – doctors, nurses, paramedics and other health workers? Who next? – Members of governments and senior administrators, law enforcement officers, military personnel? And, what about the rest of us?
- In alphabetical order?
- A lottery type system, with day and month of birth instead of a lottery number on the ball?
- By age?
It’s going to be a monumental task. Hopefully, governments around the world have already given thought to this aspect of the pandemic and have, or are already planning how the vaccine should be administered.
The following image from facebook was mainly directed at the UK, but may well be relevant in other countries. Here in the UK, people are urged to stay at home and:
- Only go outside for food, health reasons or work (but only if you cannot work from home)
- If you go out, stay 2 metres (6ft) away from other people at all times
- Do not meet others, even friends or family.

What, you mean like Trump is doing right now in buying up all and every mask and ventilator the US can find, even if it means opening closed deals and then outbidding governments closed orders with offers of three times the price of the previously agreed contract price, even after their orders were already placed and with Chinese suppliers - you could of course also question the ethics of the Chinese suppliers but their chasing the Dollar ( quite literally) almost goes without needing to be said.
Personally I dont see any scandal here - China needed the PPE before everyone else, they didn't have it and they asked their citizens world wide to do whatever they could to help get PPE back to China fast ! Sounds reasonable enough under the circumstances - albeit bloody annoying that they're now selling it back to us all at three times the price of course, but I'm guessing that they too didn't know how much or how long they'd need it for so where being cautious.

Brilliant.
No need to worry about priority for the vaccine JB. I've done a list.

Re: Coronavirus - Thailand
Trump is an idiot, and should be left out of the conversation altogether. It's still going on now, but Trump told 3M (the manufacturers of the N95 masks) not to export any more masks to Canada or Latin America. Then Canada reminded him the pulp to make those maks is actually manufactured here in British Columbia, Canada, so don't be an asshole, and send the masks we ordered. I guess just yesterday Trump rescinded the order to not export masks to Canada, so the shipments should still come through.
Same as about 6 days ago or so Trump was saying he's going to send US military troops to the US border for some unknown reason. Thankfully, there seems to be some folks in the Whitehouse who can talk him out of his delusions, so the US / Canada border will no longer be militarized.
But yes, lots of countries are going to have lots to answer for once this is over, China and the US included. There will also be lots of lessons to be learned from the likes of South Korea, Taiwan, and Germany, and dare I may say, Canada. We never make the world news for anything, but Canada has done a pretty good job too.
I'll stick with my original assertion. Once this is all over, it's Paris Accord times 1000. We're looking to become closer to world peace than we've ever been. It's a long haul, but I think it's inevitable.

I received the following email from the British Foreign & Commonwealth Office (FCO):

Thailand travel advice
Change made
The Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand has suspended incoming international passenger flights until 11.59 pm on 18 April. (‘Coronavirus’ page)

Entry and borders
The Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand has suspended incoming international passenger flights until 11.59 pm on 18 April.
An Emergency Decree entered into force on 26 March 2020, initially until 30 April. As part of this, the Thai authorities have barred all foreign nationals from entering or transiting Thailand except in certain limited circumstances. If you do not meet these criteria you should not try to enter or transit Thailand . . .

The Chinese eat everything that has four legs, except chairs; and everything that flies, except airplanes.
(Another variant of the joke goes "everything that has it's back pointing to the sky".)
Men, domesticated and wild animals mixed together seems to be a hotbed for new diseases. I read somewhere, HIV is believed to originate from monkeys/apes and transmitted to humans by people in Africa eating them.

Re: Coronavirus - Thailand
Below, I highlight two reports from the Bangkok Post, one relating to the FCO update I posted earlier at post #465, although it does not give much further information. The other report relates to a dead tourist who concealed his at-risk history :

The Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand (CAAT) has extended a ban on all commercial flights to Thailand until April 18 to support the country's campaign to contain the coronavirus.
Thailand had banned passenger flights from Saturday to Monday. Hours before the order expired, the aviation regulator issued another announcement extending the ban to April 18 . . .

How did your friend say it? With pride or matter-of-factly? The mainlanders tend to be proud of it. Really disgusting. As a vegetarian, I find it totally repulsive.
