Re: Coronavirus - Thailand
an interesting - and revealing - article in the Bangkok Post this morning:
Quote:
Thai expats urge cooperation
Citizens abroad say personal responsibility key to fighting outbreak
Many Thais living abroad agree that their experiences of the Covid-19 pandemic in their adopted nations can serve as a valuable lesson for those back home
...
"We may have our so-called 'Thai style' of doing what we want, but during a crisis, there's no room for compromise"
...
"When the government announces measures, Thais will find excuses to defy them. On the other hand, [in France] people help each other and cooperate with the government"

there is no absolute right or wrong decision here, it comes down to your personal situation and in making that decision we are all dealing with incomplete information and no way of predicting the future
my situation is almost the direct opposite of yours - I have a long term lease here and have been doing annual retirement extensions for more years than I care to remember after I finally retired. I have nothing to return to in Australia after being away for more than 25 years so did not seriously consider going "home" to spend 14 days in self isolation at a hotel then crashing at a friend's place and being the last thing they needed adding to their woes in the current situation in Sydney - even though they had offered a room
in the end who knows if Thailand, Australia, the UK, the US or wherever will be the best place to cope with the virus in the long term, and if things go seriously tits-up here and the food supply, the health system, or social order collapses I may well live - or not live - to regret ignoring the Australian government's decree to "come home now before it is too late" but like you currently "I believe I took the right decision" - the best I think we can do is hope that most of us making this decision, with all our disparate reasons, have actually made the right choice!
a bit too heavy perhaps - we need some more of your light relief!
Re: Coronavirus - Thailand
Thanks for sharing, bkkguy. As you say, there’s no right or wrong in the situation expats and long-term visitors to Thailand find themselves in. I hope you can remain in Bangkok and ride out the current storm.
And since you asked for it, how’s this for a bit light relief. A friend sent me a Covid-19 related cartoon video clip on the app’ Line, which originated on Twitter, but I did not know how to post the video directly to the forum. But I traced it on Twitter, it is a bit naughty and might well fall foul of our rules, so for safety’s sake, I have posted the link in the Holding Room. Thailand has 143 new coronavirus cases, bringing the total number of cases since the outbreak began to 1,388, the Centre for Covid-19 Administration said on Sunday.
Taweesin Wisanuyothin, the spokesman for the centre and the Public Health Ministry, said the country also recorded one new fatality, bringing the total number of deaths to seven.
The latest victim was a 68-year-old man from Nonthaburi who had attended a crowded boxing match at Lumpinee Boxing Stadium where there had been a cluster of infections, Dr Taweesin said.
The match was held at the army-run stadium on March 6. About 2,500 people attended the event that day.
The number of new cases was a significant jump from the 109 recorded on Saturday . . .
