Re: The LIST of GAY BARS and GOGO's in PATTAYA from 1980 till now
Open? Open with ? means that it might open after the closure at this moment, no idea at for now. open without ? means that they are open, serving coffee and or food at this moment

A wonderful list with great memories and maybe much more to come :)):clapping:

Yes....thank you. Halcyon days indeed.

Re: The LIST of GAY BARS and GOGO's in PATTAYA from 1980 till now
The amount of work and effort that has gone into this is impressive. Old Pattaya hands will, doubtless find plenty of memories stirred. It might be worthwhile separating the list of bars long-gone from those that are or may still be open, though. Those who are only casual visitors to Pattaya or perhaps are planning a visit at some point would then have a list of live bars. That could even be a mini list separate from the master list of bars o today and bars past. Just a thought.
It is a strange fact that despite Sawatdee now being quite Pattaya-centric, the casual visitor would be hard-pressed to find genuinely usable information about Pattaya on the forum anymore. There is very little about what separates one bar from another, for example. There is probably enough information that can be consolidated on this thread to start rectifying that.

Re: The LIST of GAY BARS and GOGO's in PATTAYA from 1980 till now
Office Boy (earlier Niddy's Nook) in Day & Night Soi 2 (near Flamingo Hotel)closed
I went there 2010 or 2011, and it was gone 2011 or 2012?
Samorn Beer Bar on Sunee Plaza Soi VC (opposite Top Man Night Club) closed 2009
Samorn or Samong (I have a picture somewhere) is where I last saw LMTU in 2012, so closing is later than 2012.
Star Boys Boys (later X-Boys) in Boyz Town 1st Soi (opposite Dreamboys) closed
Star Boys Boys (moved later 3rd Soi ) on 2nd Road Soi 15 (opp.Boyz Town) (194/23) open 1996 closed
A place "Star Boys Showbar" opposite Kawaii was open around 2013 but did not last long.
Wonderland Night Club & Bar on Sunee Plaza 1 (on the corner of Soi VC) closed
I was there 2011 or 2012, and it closed shortly after.

Re: The LIST of GAY BARS and GOGO's in PATTAYA from 1980 till now
At the end of each line is said that the bar is open or closed. closed = closed and Open? = maybe after the lockdown of the bars open = open as a coffee shop or and restaurant

Re: The LIST of GAY BARS and GOGO's in PATTAYA from 1980 till now
As soon as Covid is under total control and tourists are coming back in numbers then people will invest again in bars, so I think there will be bars, that are closed now, will open again and new bars will emerge. But till then it's a bit unpredictable. When it's time that things are more sure, I'll post a list of all bars that are in full business.
-
Re: The LIST of GAY BARS and GOGO's in PATTAYA from 1980 till now
Thank you, I will add some of your knowledge in the next update.
It was for sure Samorn Beer Bar (I have a picture too :)) ) in my honest opinion the boys moved to another place. The bar stayed open a bit longer, but as the boys went, the bar got ample customers.
You mention Star Boys Showbar but as far as I can remember it was Star Treff Showbar. The Star Boys never had a show as they were a show themselves :yahoo_mini:

Re: The LIST of GAY BARS and GOGO's in PATTAYA from 1980 till now
If you go back in time further then there was nothing ... and nothing stays the same ... from a few bars in the Village to more in Boyz Town, then much more on Sunee Plaza and after that many in The Complex, what's next? ... shall I add the gay dating sites as well ?
As money in the hands of boys (and girls) is running scarce these days and foreigners are saving money there will be a time ahead that former bar boys come back from the countryside and take their friends or brothers with them. Good times ahead, yet the date is not set.

Couldn't agree more. Incredible list. Found some info from a Feb/March 2005 Thailand trip of places visited or noted.
Leks GoGo Day/Night Soi 1 was called 'Leks Fantasea Bar' .
'Love Club' was two units down from World Boys in Day/Night Soi 1, a gay disco/club/karaoke similar to World Boys.
'Yum Yum Bar' I think Sunee or soi's leading to Sunee, but don't have exact location.
'Murtey's Bar' (not Murpheys). Only a brief mention in notes with no location noted.
Whilst Boyz Town, Pattayaland Sois 1/2, Sunee and Jomtien have all been known as the main bar areas over the last 20 years, I always found it amazing just how many bars operated in the Day/Night sois over the years.

A remarkable list by Halcyon.

As the holiday finished a while ago, I can't comment on current status.
However, Diamond Bar has definitely been open in 2021. I didn't see any signs of life at Forest House.
I thought Euro Boys host bar was open earlier in the year as well.
The only Pattaya gogo bars I've seen open in 2021 were Winner, Nice Boys, Cupidol (clothed!) and X-Boys (blokes in jeans, loud music catering to local tastes).
Panorama, Serene and Castro opened with very limited hours. e.g. Castro was opening one night a week.
Plus a street almost full of bars in Jomtien.

It puts Proust in the shade.

Re: The LIST of GAY BARS and GOGO's in PATTAYA from 1980 till now
The current status is the status in the middle of the lockdown on 22 June 2021. Diamond bar, Euro Boys host Bar were open in the beginning of this year as was another gogo in BT named Dreamboys. But they had to close because of the lockdown of bars. We have to wait and see what will happen after the Covid lockdown(s). The infection numbers in June give not much hope for an opening soon, but who knows ?

Re: The LIST of GAY BARS and GOGO's in PATTAYA from 1980 till now
Star boys started out on Soi "toyota karaoke", it's the street alongside the Welcome plaza hotel (Sai song Soi 15)
Later they moved to Pattaya land soi 1 and were opposite what eventually became kawaii boys. Eventually when star boys closed it became Star Treff Travestitie, which was a show bar
-
Re: The LIST of GAY BARS and GOGO's in PATTAYA from 1980 till now
leks Fantasea and leks Gogo were 2 different bars. The Gogo bar was underneath the soi Day night annex eventually became Birdcage.
The Fantasea location was across the street and I believe is now block E of Mosaik (+/- 1-2 shophouse)
Yum Yum was "Tom Yum" and was over Forest house (it was known as ozone at one stage and now has a sign for Cocktail boys (even though cocktail boys was originally across the street in the previous Top Man location)
My memory was that Murteys was Mutleys and was in Pattaya soi 15, near smiling boys Gogo?
It was a beer bar style host bar
-
Re: The LIST of GAY BARS and GOGO's in PATTAYA from 1980 till now
These two bars from the list are mixed up in the comments.
Murphy's Magic City Boys = Magic City Boys on Sunee Plaza 1 (opposite Rainbow Bar) closed
Muttley's Bar on Pattaya Thai Soi 14 Moo 10 (103/6) closed, as in one of the books I read but it could be Mutley's with one T.
And about the Love Club: that was more of a karaoke and I don't mention karaoke's as they were more for Thai gays or only Thai gays with hesitating foreigners :D

Re: The LIST of GAY BARS and GOGO's in PATTAYA from 1980 till now
How does this compare with straight venues, I wonder? And with gay businesses across the world?
A very sad state of affairs for those who came in the 90s and before then. But Pattaya itself is unrecognisable in other ways. I recall that on my first visit, the newly-built Royal Garden only had two floors open. And now? Soon the malls will outnumber the gay bars!

#1 Immediately pre-covid, there were still a vast number of straight bars in various parts of Pattaya. On and around walking street. On and around Soi Bukhao, including in many of the side streets in both directions off it. Also, in a couple of the streets directly north of Central Shopping Mall, there are streets which are full of straight bars. Even one of those streets seemed like it has well in excess of 50 bars.
I've no idea if they had even more straight bars 15 years ago, but struggle to imagine how this translates into downsizing like the gay scene.
#2 Royal Garden Plaza is rapidly reverting to half empty. Probably a combination of covid and newer shopping malls, like Central or Terminal 21. The more Northerly Mikes seems to have downsized back to operating on one floor. Harbor Pattaya (Sic) is half empty.

Re: The LIST of GAY BARS and GOGO's in PATTAYA from 1980 till now
There were always much more girls bars than gay places in the beginning due to the soldiers serving in Vietnam and later due to the sex tourists. Only Soi 6 in North Pattaya had about 80 girlbars in just one Soi. And as for just the last lockdown of bars, many girl bars were doing business. In number maybe 8 times higher than the gay places. But for now all are closed, many serving other services in order to survive these Covid lockdowns of bars.

Oscars closed end of March 2018, not in 1998.

Re: The LIST of GAY BARS and GOGO's in PATTAYA from 1980 till now
Cupidol Bar in Boyz Town is being renovated at this moment and will get another name : Pikky Bar
-
Re: The LIST of GAY BARS and GOGO's in PATTAYA from 1980 till now
"Pikky"? Well, that's a new one for me!
-
Re: The LIST of GAY BARS and GOGO's in PATTAYA from 1980 till now
Sorry, it is Pikky's but I guess still new for you :)) it will open as soon as the restrictions on bars are gone, it will take probably 120 days
-
Re: The LIST of GAY BARS and GOGO's in PATTAYA from 1980 till now
Let's hope Pikkys are picky when selecting staff !
Although the standards varied, at times Cupidol had the best choice of twinks in the Pattaya gogo bars.

Re: The LIST of GAY BARS and GOGO's in PATTAYA from 1980 till now
Remember "Kawai"? It took me years but I eventually discovered that it means "cute" in Japanese.

Not quite.
The correct word is "kawaii - that extra "i" at the end makes all the difference. Otherwise it's the name of a piano manufacturer.

Re: The LIST of GAY BARS and GOGO's in PATTAYA from 1980 till now
I thought it was a transliteration of Thai slang 'kuai' for banana.

“Pick Up Bar” might be more appropriate!
-
Re: The LIST of GAY BARS and GOGO's in PATTAYA from 1980 till now
I'm not sure whether all this is relevant but there have certainly been some odd names for our beloved bars, though none I can recall quite as strange as Pikky.
I recall The Mask in Bangkok,....perhaps a good name for our Covid-era. Something to do with that Jim Carrey movie, perhaps? I assume Sundance in Sunee also had associations with a famous film.

Re: The LIST of GAY BARS and GOGO's in PATTAYA from 1980 till now
In the Complex next to Sun Bar (close to The Venue) a new bar is being build: Dragon Music Lounge Pattaya. As far as I know it will be a kind of show bar with available male dancers with loud music.

If there is loud music, I hope the punters stay away until they come to their senses and I hope it's behind a closed door, so the noise does not carry to the other bars.
If Jomtien really is zoned as "residential", as is often repeated, but never proven, then the one thing they should stop is loud music. Certain bars already have the occasional unreasonably loud party.

Re: The LIST of GAY BARS and GOGO's in PATTAYA from 1980 till now
As soon as bars, etc. are allowed to open there will be another bar in the Complex opening it's doors: Dorothys Showbar .... It will be next to Double Shot Bar in the former restaurant Olivier. It proves that the Complex will open again fully when the restrictions are lifted. There will be shows in The Venue, M2M, The Palace, Dragon Music Lounge and then Dorothys. I really hope they have different shows for different people otherwise it will be survival of the best.
-
Re: The LIST of GAY BARS and GOGO's in PATTAYA from 1980 till now
So anyone who likes this new bar if and when it opens will be known as "friends of Dorothy's" then !!?? :-)
-
Re: The LIST of GAY BARS and GOGO's in PATTAYA from 1980 till now
The owner of Bubu Bar in the Complex has given up definitively due to the unforeseen future of the closure caused by Covid-19 and put his bar up for sale.

The original “Wild West Boys” was a small narrow bar but I can’t remember exactly where but it was in the Pattayaland area. It closed very quickly and moved to its much larger premises. I knew one of the Go Go Boys well and one of the guys who danced in the show. I used to sit with them in their changing room which was great fun. Sadly the bar went into a swift decline and is now a sad looking empty hulk.
They moved to the bigger unit opposite the street. Could not have been more than 10 meters away. The reason that they SEEMED to do so well, is because they paid the boys much more than the standard. If memory serves me right, it was 10k per month. They must have had 40 or 50 boys at the beginning and that brought in the customers. I use the word "customers" very loosely because most were literally sitting on their money.
That's a whole different topic, though.

Re: The LIST of GAY BARS and GOGO's in PATTAYA from 1980 till now
Wild West Boys at the end wasn't up to much. I hadn't been in there for a few years and one very short visit was sufficient to remind me why. A handful of mature guys on stage, at least one of whom looked about 40. I think they were even wearing jeans, but it really wouldn't have made any difference at all.

A cinema you say? Well, could be. I know Who Not as an extension from Blue Boy. Linked with an entrance at the Spuistraat and Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal. There was a bar with a separate entrance in the latter. They did have a theatre with shows and an SM attic. Dear god, why do I know these things :-)

A few minutes later we tried to enter just for a look and luckily this time the doorman relented. Maybe it was still too early but anyhow the room was empty, with just a bare, low and small stage near the entrance. There were fully clothed boys sitting at the tables outside. Had I paid for the drinks I suppose the boys would have come to the stage inside. Since I was not keen to wait until 2am for the place to come to life, I bid farewell to the tout and never came back. I guess the bar was meant for ladies looking for male company. When I returned in December the signage was gone.
Hahaha, that trick. I fell for that once in a gogo in Bangkok. DJ station had not yet expended to the opposite side and this gogo bar opposite had a separate entrace. We had to buy a drink before we could go in. That's what we did and once inside it was empty. 2 boys scrambled in onto the stage and that was it. Horrible...but we laughed it off en went back to DJ.
