Courts to be allowed to rule cases despite defendant's absence

The Thai cabinet has passed a bill allowing courts to rule on cases without defendant's presence. A human rights lawyer said the amendment aims at prosecuting the fugitive ex-Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra.
On 13 September 2016, the cabinet approved a bill to amend the Criminal Procedure Code. According to Sansern Kaewkamnerd, the spokesperson of Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha, the amendment will allow criminal courts to rule on cases although defendants are not present at the courts, reported Prachahat....
