best bet is don't use a wallet to go out with being steal me
Wearing a "stealth wallet" placed in an easy to steal location is a cool tactic.
On one of my early visits I had my pocket picked either at Twilight or in the taxi taking me to the hotel. As I only carry one day's allowance on me, and it was the end of the night out, whoever picked my pocket didn't get much. However, from that incident I now do two things, stay sober and carry a wallet with a chain fixed to my belt.
I don't know it it's just been bad luck or if pickpocketing is picking up in Bangkok, but this year alone I have found more hands in my pockets that in the past 10 years combined.
I also keep a small amount of cash only on me. On top of that I bought one of those wallets with a chain but rather than chaining it to my belt, I had a key chain holder riveted to the inside of my carry bag and the wallet attaches to that.
You have to watch the small children that come up to you and beg. One blocks your path at your feet (immobilize the farang) another comes from the side and tugs (distract the farang) and a third goes for the rear pocket (the farang picker). The only thing in my rear pocket is a handy pack of wet ass wipes and they don't want those.
Strange, I have spent almost 20 years of my life in Thailand and have never once been pickpocketed -- whether successfully or otherwise. Nor do I know anyone who has. Lucky, I guess.
