Eight Thai politicians are facing charges of sedition and for spreading "false information" about the draft constitution, local reports said, a development that creates "a climate of fear" in the country ahead of a referendum, according to a rights group.
Deputy Prime Minister Prawit Wongsuwan said on Thursday that the politicians, who are loyalists of former Yingluck Shinawatra, would be tried in a military court, and that their detention would continue for at least a week.... (read more)...

THE British Foreign and Commonwealth Office has warned of increased “political tensions” ahead of Thailand’s constitution referendum on August 7.

MANY eligible voters are ill-informed about the draft constitution and are likely to base their decision on irrational belief rather than objective judgement, Election Commission (EC) member Somchai Srisuthiyakorn said yesterday.

Almost 90% to vote in referendum: survey

NEARLY 90 per cent of people surveyed said they intend to cast their ballots in next Sunday’s referendum, with almost half of them planning to approve the draft constitution, a survey has found.
A total of 87.8 per cent of respondents said they would go to vote and only 6.2 per cent said they did not intend do so, according to results of the survey conducted by Bangkok University's Research Centre.... (read more)...
